We are very proud to have a full staff and in a time of skilled labour shortages, we are pleased that our College remains a school of choice for our valued existing and new staff.
We have recently welcomed a number of new staff to our community. Ms. Colby McDonald, who was School Captain in 2022, has joined us in the positions of Learning Support Officer (LSO) and Indigenous Liaison Officer. We have welcomed Ms. Carol Case-Hassall as Lab Technician and LSO, Mr. Paul Chiita, who is teaching Mathematics, Mr. Josh Russell as IT Trainee Technician, whilst he completes a traineeship with Skillinvest and Emmy Weir as a Learning Support Officer who will commence in Term 3.
Our Textiles students have been mastering their design and sewing skills throughout this semester! From creating hoodies and dressing gowns, to smaller projects like embroidery and toiletry bags, students work through the processes of investigating, designing, producing and evaluating to develop their knowledge and skills to create their item.
Year 8 student Jesbel Abhilash recently competed at the Victoria Knanaya Catholic Congress volleyball tournament in Melbourne, where his team had some excellent results! Jesbel’s team won 3 out of their 4 games, going on to play in the final. Jesbel’s dad became his opponent in the final! Jesbel was named player of the match and they won a $300 prize.
If you know a St Brigid’s College student doing great things in the community, please get in touch with info@stbc.vic.edu.au
Well done to Year 9 student Hannah Arnup for her recent performance in Ararat Regional Theatre Society’s production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat! What a great experience! Photo credit to the Wimmera Mail Times.
There are many exciting things happening in Year 7 at the moment! As we near the end of the semester, Textiles students have been completing their ugly dolls and canvas bag projects. In Science, students were introduced to chemistry and states of matter and mixtures. Through a play-dough prac, students were shown how you can take pure substances and mix them together to form a uniform mixture.
Year 11 and 12 VET students in their small business class dedicated their year creating their own range of products which they sold at a pop-up shop in Horsham Plaza. All the money raised from the sale of products was then donated to Wimmera Cancer Centre at Horsham.
Cancer Centre Manager Carmel O’Kane accepted the $889 cheque, thanking the students and their teacher Mrs Chris Rook on a wonderful effort.
“It’s so lovely to see young people contributing to their community while learning new skills and developing a business acumen at the same time,” Ms O’Kane said. “We are very grateful to the school and to the class for wanting to support our centre.”
Congratulations to Finn Arnel and Enid Knight for winning the Skillinvest competition at the Western Victorian Careers Expo on Tuesday. The students won a voucher to the Horsham Cinema.
This week Year 9 -12 students attended the Western Victoria Careers Expo at Longerenong. It was a great opportunity for students to be empowered and informed by attending a range of presentations and to check out around 80 different exhibitors.
Earlier this week, Year 12 students Sean Makoni and Thomas Hobbs attended the Yarriambiack Business Expo. The expo was a great networking opportunity for Sean and Thomas, who are the Young Entrepreneur representatives of the West Vic Business Executive Committee.
"Over the past year, we have been collaborating on a project that has caught the attention of West Vic Business, who appointed us as members of their Executive Committee. This has given us the opportunity to attend many incredible events, most recently being the West Vic Business Expo. During the expo we were introduced to many small business owners and representatives, This was an amazing opportunity to network and discuss business operations. For example, several Samsung representatives were discussing the opportunities of Artificial Intelligence and how it can benefit a small business or organisation wishing to expand its limits. Afterwards, we sat in for a few presentations in which a variety of experts and guest speakers mainly discussed the business opportunities within the Wimmera and Western Victoria. Overall, this experience has been enlightening and we are thankful for this opportunity, which has us looking forward to upcoming events with West Vic Business." - Sean Makoni.
Recently the Year 8/9 Visual Communication Design class had an excursion to the Horsham Regional Art Gallery to work on some paper construction flowers with artist Eliza Jane Gilchrist. This was a great introduction to the creation of their cardboard models of an interior design in class. They look fabulous! The 8/9 Vis Com Class and Art electives have also made some inspirational posters that will be sent to Australian Olympians when they are in Paris. Good to see them getting into the Olympic spirit and supporting our Aussie athletes!
