English Speaking Union Grand Finals – Milly takes first place!

As you may have seen on our socials, Milly Tilson participated in the Junior English Speaking Union Competition. Milly is continuously impressive in the area of public speaking, including her ability to improvise and speak from her own experiences and knowledge. This competition was no exception and Milly came out as the winner of the state grand final. This is the second win of this competition for Milly which shows her absolute dedication of her craft and continuous desire to build her skills. Milly, well done!

Term 2 MUN at MtA

Last Friday, Year 10, 11 and 12 students gathered for our second MUN at MtA. This time, students engaged in discussions around climate change and the effect of this on different countries within our world. Students were articulate in their ideas, able to justify their arguments and engaged in negotiation and discussion with peers.

This is truly a program that extends our students who have a desire to actively engage in the world around them. All of these students should be congratulated on their commitment to improving their knowledge, skills and perspective on the world around them. What a way to create global citizens for our world!

Thank you to Jack and Rudolf from the Queensland UN Youth association who ran our MUN and ensured students continued to skill build in their diplomatic processes.

Mt A 2024 Debating Season - Captains Wrap Up!

As our regular debating season wraps up for 2024, we are excited to announce that we are expecting five teams in the Queensland Debating Union finals rounds. This is a testament to the dedication and commitment of our debaters this year. More updates will come regarding these students, but for now, our 2024 Debating Captain, Lizzie Christian, leaves us with a wrap up of the season…

“As Debating Captain this year, I've had the privilege of witnessing our teams unite and thrive, both individually and as a whole. But beyond the victories and defeats, what truly matters is the journey we've shared. Whether it was those early morning or afternoon practices, each session was a lesson in teamwork and collaboration. I've watched every member of our teams blossom, gaining confidence and discovering their unique voices."

Reader's Cup

Mount Alvernia entered two Year 7 & 8 teams into the recent Children's Book Council of Australia Readers Cup Competition. Our students prepared for this event by reading books and working in teams to test themselves on their knowledge. Both teams had a lot of fun on the night, interacting with students from other schools and hearing from guest author, Jan-Andrew Henderson who entertained with stories of his career in writing. Congratulations to both teams for their hard work!
