Year 10 Pathways

In preparation for the upcoming GYC subject counselling session this Friday, each Year 10 student, during their Pathways lessons, has been working towards their final subject selections for Year 11, 2025.

Dates to Remember

Student Course Counselling - Friday 21 June : 9.00am - 11.30am

Every Year 10 will attend GYC (Hobart Campus) tomorrow. They will be provided with a tour of the campus, information to consider when completing their subject selections for 2025 and attend one-on-one subject counselling with a GYC staff member.

UTAS - Hobart Campus Sunday 30 June : 10.00am - 2.00pm

If any students are interested, UTAS is running a school leaver expo. The expo, whilst pitched at students already in Yr 11 or 12, can still be beneficial to our current Year 10 students. It is an opportunity to go and find out about courses, view the campus and gather information that may assist you with your College subject selections.

Be sure to register by accessing the UTAS website .

Elective Subjects 2025

All Year 8 and 9 students will be in the process of considering their elective subject selections for 2025. An email was sent to families on June 7th detailing the process and students were addressed by the Director of Curriculum and Pedagogy on Monday 17 June who explained the selection process.

Whilst the Portal for submitting preferences opens this week, the due (closing) date is not until Monday 29 July. This provides plenty of opportunity for each student to gather information to allow them to make more informed decisions.

The following is a list of points to consider facilitating informed subject choices. These points will allow each student to gain an understanding of “what” they are signing up for.

  1. Attend Parent/Carers and students’ Elective Subject information afternoon Thursday 20 June from 3.30pm - 5.00pm in Providence House.
  2. Access the Year 9 and 10 Elective Subject Guide and read the material relevant to each subject of interest.

Guidelines to follow:

  • Select subjects that interest you and subjects you are good at.
  • Be realistic: Is the subject at the right challenge level for you?
  • Balance your workload - seek a challenge but do now overwhelm yourself.
  • Consider your possible future Pathway - choose subjects that can support your Pathway OR if you are unsure keep your options open by choosing broad and diverse subjects.
  • Finally, DO NOT PICK elective subjects because your friends are also choosing the subject OR based on the hope a particular teacher may teach the subject.

Career Counselling

If any student is interested in further career counselling I am available to guide them through this process. Send me an email: petra.dennis@mountcarmel.tas.edu.au and an appropriate time will be arranged.
