Term 2 Interschool Sport
By: Katie Cook - Sport Coordinator
The second half of Term 2 has continued to showcase an outstanding period of sport at Warrandyte High School. Our students have represented the school with determination, teamwork, and pride across a wide range of interschool competitions. Their commitment and sportsmanship have been evident in every event, reflecting the strong culture of participation and excellence within our sporting program.
Our Year 7 and 8 students recently enjoyed a highly successful day of Junior Interschool Sport, highlighted by a remarkable premiership victory from our Junior Girls AFL team.
Despite having no interchange players and a squad made up of both experienced footballers and students playing their very first AFL matches, the girls demonstrated incredible resilience and teamwork throughout the day. They recorded impressive wins in their pool matches before earning a place in the Grand Final against undefeated Heathmont Secondary College.
Trailing 7–0 at halftime, the team produced an outstanding second-half comeback, keeping Heathmont scoreless while kicking four goals and two behinds to secure a memorable 26–7 victory and claim the premiership. It was fantastic to see students score their first AFL goals and be celebrated by their teammates, reflecting the strong culture and support within the group. Emily Guymer, Ella Guymer and Elisha McEvoy were among the many students who made significant contributions throughout the day.

On the netball courts, our Junior Boys Netball teams also enjoyed a fantastic day of competition. With many students trying netball for the first time, both teams embraced the challenge and displayed excellent teamwork, sportsmanship and enthusiasm. The A Team finished with three wins from five games, while the B Team progressed all the way to the Grand Final. In a thrilling finish, Koby scored a buzzer-beating goal to secure the win and crown Warrandyte High School B Division Premiers.
Congratulations to all students involved for the way they represented the school and embodied our values throughout the day.

On Tuesday 26 May, 11 students from Years 7–10 represented the school at the Division Cross Country Championships.
All students demonstrated outstanding determination and perseverance as they competed against some of the strongest runners in the division. We congratulate Owen Blackford, who finished 4th in the 14-Year-Old Boys event, and Grace Celentane, who placed 4th in the 16-Year-Old Girls event.
A special congratulations also goes to Olivia Whatmough, Remi Hynes and Adiel Pinsky, who all achieved Top 15 finishes and have qualified for the Regional Finals. We wish them every success as they continue their cross-country journey.
Beyond the impressive results, it was wonderful to see students supporting one another, challenging themselves and proudly representing the school throughout the event.

Despite facing freezing cold temperatures and persistent rain throughout the day, our Year 8 students proudly represented the school at the recent Interschool Sports Day, demonstrating outstanding resilience, teamwork and sportsmanship.
The girls' netball team enjoyed a successful day of competition, winning three of their five matches. Throughout the tournament, the team displayed excellent teamwork, determination and encouragement for one another. Their ability to work together under challenging conditions was a highlight of the day and contributed to some impressive performances on the court.
On the football field, our Year 8 boys AFL team faced an enormous challenge, competing all day with a squad of just 12 players and no interchange bench. The team was supported by a couple of Year 7 students who willingly stepped up to play alongside their older peers. Their enthusiasm, commitment and willingness to embrace the challenge was a real reflection of the schools values. Despite the physical demands and wet conditions, the entire team never stopped competing. Their determination, resilience and support for one another throughout the day was a credit to the team.
A special thank you must also go to our Year 9, 10 and 11 student helpers, who played an important role in the success of the day. Through their coaching, officiating and encouragement, they provided invaluable support to our Year 8 students while also demonstrating excellent leadership skills. It was fantastic to see older students acting as role models and helping create a positive and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

Congratulations to all students for their effort, sportsmanship and representation. Their positive attitudes, persistence and support for teammates showcased the strong culture that exists within our sporting program.
Congratulations to Adiel, Owen, Remi and Olivia, who proudly represented WHS at the Eastern Metropolitan Region Cross Country Finals held at Yarra Glen Racecourse this term.
Competing against more than 100 of the region’s strongest cross-country runners, all four students demonstrated outstanding commitment, resilience and determination as they challenged themselves at the highest level of school competition.
Adiel delivered an excellent performance in the 16-Year-Old Boys 5km event, achieving a personal best time of 20 minutes and 32 seconds to finish 36th overall. This was a fantastic reward for his hard work and dedication. In the 14-Year-Old Boys 3km race, Owen continued his strong form, placing 36th overall with an impressive time of 12 minutes and 6 seconds. Remi, competing at the Regional Finals for the first time, also performed strongly, finishing 86th in a time of 13 minutes and 2 seconds. Olivia rounded out the team’s efforts in the girls' competition. Competing at Regionals for the first time, she showed great determination and perseverance, finishing 93rd overall in a time of 16 minutes and 16 seconds.
While the results themselves were impressive, it was equally pleasing to see the students encouraging and supporting one another throughout the day. Their positive attitude, sportsmanship and teamwork were an excellent reflection of the school values.
We congratulate all four students on their achievements and thank them for representing the school with pride

This term students have not only had the opportunity to represent WHS in different sporting competitions but have also had opportunities to develop their sporting leadership skills. Sienna Graham, Charlotte Williams, Yousof Memari and Silas Draeger embraced a leadership opportunity by officiating at the Warrandyte Primary School Interschool Netball and Soccer competition.
Throughout the games, the students demonstrated outstanding maturity, confidence and professionalism as they took responsibility for managing the match and ensuring the game was played fairly and safely. They maintained excellent control of each contest while clearly explaining rules and decisions to the primary school students, helping them to develop their understanding of the games and build their skills.
The students' communication and leadership skills were evident throughout the event, earning praise from teachers from both participating primary schools. Their ability to engage positively with younger students and create an enjoyable sporting environment was particularly impressive.
This opportunity provided valuable real-world experience in leadership, officiating and community engagement, while also strengthening the connection between Warrandyte High School and our local primary schools.
Congratulations to Sienna, Charlotte, Yousof and Silas on the outstanding manner in which you represented our school. Your actions were a wonderful example of our school values in action and highlighted the positive contribution our students continue to make within the local community.

We congratulate all students who have participated in school sport this term and thank them for their commitment, effort and sportsmanship. Their achievements continue to make our school community proud.
