VET Sport, Aquatic and Recreation: A Term of Active Learning and Real-World Experience

Students in both the Unit 1&2 and Unit 3&4 VET Sport, Aquatic and Recreation classes have enjoyed a highly engaging and productive term, combining practical experiences with classroom learning to develop their skills across a range of units.

Unit 1&2 - Officiating skills and knowledge and Organising personal work priorities

Our Unit 1 & 2 students have enjoyed a busy and rewarding term as they developed their knowledge and practical skills in sports officiating. Throughout the term, students have gained a deeper understanding of the important roles and responsibilities of an official, including applying rules fairly, managing games effectively and creating a positive sporting environment for all participants.

A key feature of the course has been the opportunity for students to put their learning into practice. Students have officiated games involving their peers and other year levels across the school, gaining valuable real-world experience in a variety of sporting settings. They are now looking forward to taking on the important responsibility of officiating the upcoming Year 7 Interschool Netball and Soccer Competition.

It has been particularly pleasing to see students' confidence grow throughout the term. Many students who were initially hesitant to make decisions or take control of games have developed the confidence to communicate clearly, make decisive calls and manage challenging situations. Equally impressive has been the support shown by more experienced students, who have willingly mentored and encouraged their classmates, helping them build their skills and confidence.

Beyond sport, officiating provides students with opportunities to develop a range of valuable life skills. Effective communication, leadership, assertiveness, decision-making, conflict resolution and resilience are all essential qualities that students have practised throughout the term. These skills will not only assist them as sporting officials but will also benefit them in their future studies, workplaces and everyday lives.

Congratulations to all Unit 1 & 2 students on their enthusiasm, commitment and growth throughout the term. They should be extremely proud of the progress they have made and the professionalism they have displayed in their officiating roles.

Unit 3&4 – Group Facilitation and Coaching

Our unit 3&4 students completed two key units with a strong practical focus. The first centred on group facilitation, where students applied the practical knowledge gained during the Year 7 camp to the theoretical aspect of the course. They developed an understanding of group dynamics, conflict resolution, goal setting, and the stages of group development, essential skills for leading and supporting groups.

The second unit focused on coaching foundation level participants. Students explored the role of a coach, effective communication techniques, behaviour management strategies, and the importance of reflecting on their own performance.

This learning was brought to life in two different ways. Initially students were taken back to being foundation level participants themselves learning to ice skate and play ice hockey. During the excursion students discovered what it was like to be a beginner in a sport and the practice it takes to develop a new skill. They also gained valuable knowledge observing how the coaches instructed them using a range of different coaching, communication, demonstration and feedback styles.

Students then put this knowledge into practice during a four-week coaching placement at Warrandyte Primary School. Students designed and delivered athletics sessions for Grade 3 and 4 students, covering sprint starts and relays, long jump, triple jump and shot put in preparation for their athletics carnival. Feedback from the primary students was overwhelmingly positive, with comments such as:

“It was really fun and I got better each week.”

“It was so cool having the high school students teach us”

“I liked how they showed us what to do. They helped me learn lots of new things”

“They were really nice and always helped us ”

“The sessions where so much fun. I liked playing the games with them and then doing the different skills. They were really helpful and funny”

This authentic experience gave students valuable insight into coaching younger participants. They built strong connections with the primary students and showed noticeable growth each week in their confidence, ability to adapt activities, use demonstrations effectively, provide feedback and coach groups with enthusiasm and professionalism.
