Student Voice Council

Student Voice Council: Making Our School Better Together, A group with a plan - The SVC meets regularly. Students from different year levels come together to share ideas, set priorities, and take action. They listen to classmates, talk with teachers and staff, and keep detailed notes so nothing gets lost. The council’s goal is simple, make the school safer, cleaner, and more welcoming for everyone.

Beautification team and water taps

One project the Student Voice Council started this year is the Beautification Team. Students and staff volunteered to plant flowers, repaint benches, and clean common areas. The team also noticed a practical problem, some of our water taps around the are old, dripping, or hard to use. The council researched options, measured flow rates, and wrote a short proposal explaining why new taps would reduce waste, cut repair costs, and promote overall school improvement.

Planning next term’s events - While working on facilities, the SVC is also planning events for next term. Ideas include a Health and Hydration Week (to raise awareness about drinking water and keeping taps working), Supporting MND patients and a Volunteer Beautification Day where students can help paint and plant. Each event has a student coordinator, a budget request, and a timeline. Planning documents list tasks, volunteers, safety needs, and ways to advertise across classrooms and on social media run by the school.

Hopes for more events and improvements - SVC members hope to grow participation so more students feel they have a voice. They want recurring events, seasonal clean-ups, a student-led maker fair, and monthly “green team” checks of the school environment and  gardens. Beyond events, the council is pursuing larger improvements, brighter hallway lighting, repaired drinking fountains, and new signage to celebrate student work. They plan to track progress by publishing short monthly updates in the school newsletter and hosting brief assemblies where students report outcomes and next steps.

Why this matters - When students lead projects, they learn planning, communication, and problem-solving. The SVC turns ideas into action, improves daily life at school, and builds community pride. Small changes, like fixing a tap, make a big difference in health, convenience, and how people feel about their school. The Student Voice Council shows that when students work together with staff and families, they can create lasting, positive change.
