Year 3 Incursion

Year 3 Incursion with Deadly Kultja

On Tuesday June 2nd, Year 3 students participated in an incursion with Deadly Kultja, learning about Indigenous Australian and Torres Strait Islander cultures through a variety of activities. They began with a session called Deadly Infusion, where students learnt about the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags, including what the colours and symbols represent such as the sun (yellow), the people (black), land (red/green) and ocean (blue). Our Indigenous leaders Barama and Jeremiah then showed the students some different artefacts and explained how they were traditionally used by the Indigenous people of Australia, such as the animal furs and skins to keep them warm, (kangaroo-wollert), tools to hunt animals such as the boomerang and spear thrower and even instruments to mimic animals calls of emus and to tell a story. We learnt that the yirriki is an instrument that makes a noise that sounds like didgeridoo.

Our next two sessions focussed on different aspects of Indigenous culture, one on art and symbols and one games and sports that practiced practical hunting skills. In the art session, students drew a meeting place using traditional symbols added in different story telling elements such as animal tracks and weather. Once they were finished, small groups of students acted out their stories for an audience.

In the sport session, students played different collaborative games that focussed on skills used in hunting animals such as working as a team to tag or catch a group of ‘fish’ and running, dodging and catching objects like using spears or other hunting tools.

After the incursion, students reflected on their learning and what they enjoyed the most.

Arhanth 3D: I learnt how they used the yirrki to make different sounds such as the emu and kangaroo.

Jenny 3D: My favourite part was when we had to guess what the animal sound was being played on the yirriki.

Cianna 3D: I learnt about how they use possum skins to keep warm.

Lucille 3D: I learnt that termites made the yirrki by eating the inside of the tree trunk to make a hollow. I also enjoyed the art because we learnt about the different symbols and what they mean.

Anika 3A: My favourite part was the P.E because we were playing tag.

Eli 3A: I learnt that Aboriginal people wrapped up their babies in a possum fur. I liked the art the best.

Jackson 3A: I liked the P.E because I got to run everywhere and there were people who were fish and people who were hunters and I created an alliance to catch them.

Millie 3A: I learnt that different symbols mean different things in the art lesson like woman and kangaroo. I enjoyed creating a story only using the symbols.

Buena 3S: I liked the art because it was fun and I got to do a performance

Nivi 3S: I liked the sports because we learnt what Aboriginal people played.

Riya 3S: I liked the sports because we got to learn some cultural games that Aboriginal people used to play and they were fun.

Kiaan 3S: I liked the games because I wanted to see their cultural games they played and invented before basketball.

Jasper 3S: I liked the drawing because I had fun and I liked learning about the new symbols.
