Celebrating Our New SUP Leaders
Burwood East Primary School is proud to announce the selection of our new Stand Up Project (SUP) Leaders. On Monday 15 June, these students were recognised and presented with their official SUP badges during assembly, celebrating their achievement and commitment to student leadership.
As they begin this important role, they will be supported by our dedicated Wellbeing Team, school leadership and the experienced 2025 SUP Leaders. Together, these staff and student mentors will provide guidance, encouragement and valuable mentoring, helping our newly elected representatives develop the confidence and skills needed to make a positive impact within our school community.
Two weeks earlier, our SUP representatives participated in a leadership workshop facilitated by Tilda and Tori from The Stand Up Project, alongside staff members Aiesha and Katie. During the session, students explored important wellbeing topics and identified issues that matter most to young people, including inclusion, fair play, exclusion and the challenges some students face when speaking up for others. They also discussed the importance of being an upstander rather than remaining a bystander when someone needs support.
The workshop also provided an opportunity for students to begin planning future presentations and educational sessions. Working collaboratively, they brainstormed key messages and learning experiences that they will share with our Year 1 and 2 students, as well as parents who will be invited to attend a special SUP community session on Tuesday 28 July in Term 3. Further information about this exciting event will be shared closer to the date.
Students approached the planning process with enthusiasm, creativity and maturity. They generated a range of engaging ideas, including short films, picture books, posters, interactive puzzles and games designed to help younger students understand how to respond when they witness unkind behaviour. Through these activities, students will explore the importance of taking positive action rather than remaining silent due to fear of being labelled a "snitch", following the crowd, or assuming that if nobody else is helping, there must not be a problem (a phenomenon known as pluralistic ignorance).
Wellbeing remains a key priority at Burwood East Primary School. What makes The Stand Up Project so powerful is its focus on addressing bullying, exclusion and conflict at their core through student voice and action. By empowering students to become active upstanders, the program develops empathy, courage and leadership while creating a safer, more inclusive environment where everyone feels valued, respected and supported.
We congratulate our new SUP representatives and look forward to seeing the positive difference they will make throughout the year.
