Christmas is a rescue story

"Soul felt its worth." A stunning line from ‘O Holy Night’, easily missed amongst the crescendos of a beautifully written song. 

The Nativity – a picture of Jesus’ miraculous birth and God’s love for us. This too can easily be missed during the festive season. We do our best to turn our attention to Jesus. We meditate on his coming, the circumstances, the gift. But have we lost our awe and wonder about what his coming was for?

Christmas is a rescue. God coming to rescue us. It is an act of humility, love and sacrifice unparalleled in the history of the world. The act is not primarily to show the greatness of God, even though it does, the act has a fierce intention to it, and the object of this act is you and me; the purpose is our rescue and restoration, to bring us back to God, for he LOVES us.

Love thinks in terms of precious value – we mattered too much for God to leave His people. 

Titus 3:4-7 from the Amplified Bible says;

4 But when the goodness and kindness of God our Saviour and His love for mankind appeared [in human form as the Man, Jesus Christ], 5 He saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we have done, but because of His own compassion and mercy, by the cleansing of the new birth (spiritual transformation, regeneration) and renewing by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He poured out richly upon us through Jesus Christ our Saviour, 7 so that we would be justified [made free of the guilt of sin] by His [compassionate, undeserved] grace, and that we would be [acknowledged as acceptable to Him and] made heirs of eternal life [actually experiencing it] according to our hope (His guarantee).

I pray that this Christmas we will fall in love again with His amazing heart and to allow ourselves to experience some deep shift in our soul, as we come to feel our worth. We must really matter.
