Principal's Message

Nurture.  Innovate.  Celebrate.

Dear Students, Parents, Carers and Families

ACE SPACE IS OUT OF THIS WORLD!

What a year it’s been! A number of students have had the opportunity to improve their Math skills this year by attending the ACE Space program, and I am pleased to announce that the majority of these students have seen tremendous growth in their assessment pieces.

ACE Space Gives Students Wings to Fly

At the beginning of each term, most students are a little apprehensive as they are not too sure what they will be working on. However, as they settle into the program, they become super excited and can't wait to come back each week!

The ACE Space program aims to provide additional mathematical support, often covering topics that they are currently studying in the classroom. It also offers extension opportunities, with some students even being introduced to secondary school math! How exciting is that?

Exploring the Galaxy of Mathematical Thinking

Throughout our ACE Space journey this year, we have focused on additive and multiplicative thinking. We have discovered the power of using the CUBES strategies to solve worded problems, as well as exploring different strategies for answering multiple-choice questions in preparation for NAPLAN.

Each student has shown dedication and resilience, especially when learning new concepts. They have proven themselves to be brave explorers of the mathematical galaxy.

Highlights from our Space Adventures

Let's take a moment to celebrate some of the incredible achievements our ACE Space students have accomplished this year:

  1. Improved Problem-Solving Skills: Our students have become experts at using the CUBES strategies to tackle complex worded problems. They have learned to break down problems into manageable steps, identify key information, and solve them with confidence.
  2. Increased Mathematical Fluency: Through regular practice and hands-on activities, our students have become more fluent in their understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. They can now apply these skills to solve real-life problems effortlessly.
  3. Mastered Multiple-Choice Techniques: With their hard work and perseverance, our students have learned various strategies for tackling multiple-choice questions effectively. They can eliminate incorrect options, analyze patterns, and make informed choices.
  4. Expanded Horizons in Secondary Math: Some of our students have gone above and beyond by delving into secondary school math. They have explored topics like algebra, geometry, and statistics, broadening their mathematical horizons and preparing themselves for future challenges.

For those students who have attended the program this year, congratulations on your achievements and in the words of Buzz Lightyear, ‘To infinity and beyond!’

LEARNING TO “REMEMBER...IS IMPORTANT.”

In our fast-paced and interconnected world, it is crucial that we pass on the stories and lessons of those who came before us to future generations. Remembrance Day offers an opportunity to educate and engage our young people, ensuring that the memory of those who sacrificed their lives, lives on. By teaching our children about the past, we empower them to shape a better future—a future where conflicts are resolved peacefully, where freedom and justice prevail, and where the sacrifices of the past are never in vain.

As the early morning sun shone through the tree branches over the school community on Friday 10th November each student proudly displayed our school values of Respect, Responsibility, Relationships and Resilience as they listened intently to the stories of mateship and the importance of the red poppy. Our school leaders led our whole school assembly with confidence and calm as we observed a minute of silence for the fallen, listened to the poem “On Flanders Fields” by John McCrae and watched our school flags rise to the distinct sound of the bugle.  Students, teachers, and parents together as a school community sang the Australian National Anthem before heading back to class for a day of learning.

Throughout the day, every class made their way to our special lone pine, a descendant tree from the sole standing ‘lonely’ pine tree in Gallipoli for further discussion, reflection and laying down of flowers and wreaths make by every class during art sessions.

Thank you parents and carers for supporting the effort of the SRC in the selling of Remembrance Day poppies, wrist bands and keyrings.  All money donated will be given to Legacy through the Berwick RSL.
