Student Achievements

Katherine Kucharski Excels at the Chevron Focus Environment Photography Competition
We are thrilled to share the wonderful achievements of talented Year 9 student Katherine Kucharski, who has again excelled in this year’s Chevron Focus Environment Photography Competition.
The competition, open to all WA primary and secondary students, celebrates WA’s unique biodiversity and helps young people to appreciate the natural environment, as well as better understand the importance of protecting and managing it.
Participants from across the State submitted almost 900 photos in three categories: WA’s Native Species, WA’s Habitats and Ecosystems, and Sustainability in WA.
Across the categories, Katherine achieved 1st place in Native Species, 1st place in Habitats and Ecosystems, and 2nd place in Sustainability for her age group. On Monday 13 November she claimed well-deserved cash prizes at an awards ceremony which was held in the new Chevron building.
This is a huge achievement by Katherine, and we acknowledge her for pursuing her passions and demonstrating excellence in her craft.
Her photographs, together with their titles and captions, are below:
Bee Sharing, Be Caring (1st prize - WA's Native species)
Rainbow Bee-Eaters, or “Birranga”, migrate to Lake Gwelup to mate and nest. They acrobatically catch bees in flight before carefully removing the stingers and sharing.
Apex Predator (1st prize - WA's Habitats and Ecosystems)
Although usually feeding on marine animals, this juvenile White-Bellied Sea-Eagle proves its dominance over the food web, consuming a Galah on a giant termite mound.
Flying Fire (2nd prize - Sustainability in WA)
Clearing and fires reduce forest habitats and threaten Forest Red-tailed Black Cockatoo numbers. Lesmurdie Falls National Park provides them with a much-needed safe habitat.
Jeremy Wang’s Success in the Australian Mathematics Competition
We are delighted to announce that Jeremy Wang, a very bright Year 5 student, has excelled in this year’s Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC). The competition, which challenges participants to solve complex problems, is Australia’s longest-running, largest and best-known Maths competition for school students.
This year, Jeremy emerged as a prize winner! Achieving this accolade places Jeremy in the top 0.3% in his category, a remarkable feat considering the intense competition.
Congratulations to Jeremy for this outstanding achievement!
