Fun in the sun at Junior Athletics Carnivals

The GYC Hobart oval was a hive of activity today for our Kinder and Prep to Year 2 Athletics Carnivals.

Students had endless fun in the sun as they competed in vortex and turbo javelin throwing, tug of war, egg and spoon races, sack races, sprint, long jump and a teddy bear race (a highlight for the Kinder students).

The boundless energy, joy and enthusiasm from all participants was wonderful to see. Well done to everyone involved and thank you to all families who attended in support of their children.

JSSATIS Athletics Carnival

In stark contrast to the week before, our JSSATIS Athletics team was met with sunny and warm conditions at their carnival on Thursday 9 November, but the conditions did not stop our athletes from performing at their best and enjoying themselves at the same time.

We had a successful day with many ribbons received. Special mention to Tatum Smith (Year 3) who broke the Year 3 Girls 200m record – a record that has stood since 2008. Well done, Tatum!

Regional Basketball Tournament #2

It was our Year 3/4 basketballer’s turn to compete in the southern regional basketball tournament last weekend. We entered two Year 3/4 teams in the Division 2 roster.

Our St Mary’s Blue team started the tournament with a big win. They continued to battle hard all weekend and should be congratulated for the positive way they approached and played each game. The continued improvement throughout the tournament was fantastic to see.

A big thank you to Daniel McKenzie who coached the girls and made sure that regardless of the scoreline, they had a great tournament and finished every game with a smile.

Smiles all round for our St Mary's Blue team!

Under the guidance of coach Lucas Brown, our St Mary’s Green team had a very successful tournament. In every game, the team showed great teamwork and skill, and their confidence grew, making them a formidable opponent. They were pipped at the post in the grand final, going down by just seven points—it was close until the very end!

I would like to sincerely thank Lucas for sharing his expertise and knowledge with the team.

With all rosters and tournaments, coaches and managers give their personal time to ensure our students gain experience and are able to participate. Without them it just doesn’t happen!

Again, I thank Daniel and Lucas, but I would also like to acknowledge and thank Louise McKenzie (Blue) and Amanda Sinclair (Green) for managing the teams and the team requirements during the tournament. Thank you too to Talia Wighton and Zoe Walkley (and mum Teagan) for officiating the tournament.

Lastly, thank you to all families. The commitment required by families to allow their children to participate in weekend tournaments does not go unnoticed!

Rowing Tasmania Club Regatta

Well done to our SMC rowers on their efforts at the recent Rowing Tasmania State Club Regatta 2 at Franklin.

Six students competed in the U19 and U17 age groups across a range of events, representing SMC with pride and supporting their clubmates from St Virgil's College.

A big thank you to all helpers, volunteers and supporters on the day.

Our athletes are hard at work preparing for the Schools Regatta 1, which is set to take place at Lake Barrington this weekend. Good luck to all rowing crews!
