Stepping in the right direction
An exciting time for the First Nations community at St Mary’s College—the establishment of a new cultural installation is underway.
The steps leading past the Meeting Place will soon be adorned with words in palawa kani and decorative imagery, derived from sketches of native plants and natural features created by First Nations students.
Words like ‘milaythina’ (Country), ‘pulawini’ (red ochre), and ‘takariliya’ (family) will be showcased, demonstrating their importance to the SMC First Nations community.
The 17 words chosen were selected in collaboration with the First Nations students and community member Sharnie Read and will encourage curiosity and learning within the College regarding palawa culture.

Year 8 Pillars
Last week during their Pillars lesson, Year 8B organised and ran a program of outdoor activities for Mrs Shanny's Year 4 class and Ms Harvey's Year 5 class. As you can see from the photos below, all students thoroughly enjoyed being outdoors, playing with their friends and interacting with the Year 8s.
It was wonderful to observe the Year 8 students stepping up to explain the games, encouraging the younger participants and having fun too. This was a very positive way for the Junior and Senior students and teachers to to spend time together.

Year 7s take time to reflect
On 13-14 November, the Year 7s took time out of their normal schedule to pause and reflect on their lives, their relationships and their faith.
Held at the Lindisfarne Rowing Club, the reflection day explored the SMC touchstones of hospitality, compassion and simplicity, with students focusing on how Nano Nagle inspires us to live out these touchstones in our interactions with one another and the wider community.
As part of the day, students each created an inspirational touchstone design on a mug which will go into Murphy's Café circulation in 2024!
