Farewell 

It is not often that a volunteer would come along and devote his time as passionately as Doug Faram. His commitment and experience has only enhanced our tech area to offer the best for our students.

Doug's son Andrew attended the school, and after a chance meeting on the stairs, I recognised him as the hardware store owner in Port Melbourne that I frequented in my early years in the trade. (We were both a lot younger then.) Having recently retired, I asked if he was interested in volunteering to help in the tech area, Doug jumped at the opportunity.

His support of the students through preparing materials for the classes, assisting in the classroom, building sets for the productions, and re-building the woodwork and storerooms after the big build, are just a few of the many things Doug has done during his time in achieving a tech area that parents and tradespeople alike are in awe.

Doug leaves us after seven years volunteering at GEC to work on his own shed, while still volunteering with Austin Health and an active member in his local church.

Technology 2023

So ends the year for GEC students in the workshop.  Our Year 7s completed their design of a mobile phone holder and some were given the opportunity to form a brass ring and use the oxyacetylene. 

Year 9 students have completed their own models they designed such as shadow boxes, chopping boards and boxes. 

In Year 10 many students completed larger projects that they designed, including bedside tables, cabinets and chessboards for the champions. New machines introduced to them to use included air nail guns and routers. 

Technology gives students the opportunity to come out of their normal classes and into the workshops and build a few projects while teaching them how to use the machines and hand tools. They then explore their creativity further by designing and building something they would like. 

I hope that parents and carers have enjoyed their creations.
