2A Experiences Forces at Scienceworks!

On Friday the 10th of November, 2A merrily made their way to Scienceworks in Spotswood to learn even more about forces to connect with our Inquiry unit of learning, ‘How do forces impact object around me?”. The students were well prepared with questions and knowledge on the physical science of forces, push, pull, gravity, and friction and were challenged to deepen their learning further through their encounters with the exhibition spaces and a Toys and Forces show.

The weeks prior to leaving, students developed expectations for their teams and were primed to think about their actions so to uphold the Glen Waverley Primary School Values and to keep themselves and each other safe on the bus, crossing the road and while navigating Scienceworks. They conducted in class experiments that explored gravity, friction, push and pull, where they predicted the outcomes and recorded the results through observations and measurement.

At Scienceworks, while exploring the Thinking Ahead, Sportsworks and Beyond Perceptions interactive spaces, students were encouraged to think about what type of forces they applied and how this affected the objects they were manipulating. Additionally, students were engaged during a hands-on show involving rockets, air cannons and balls to demonstrate a variety of forces and their application in play. This learning has certainly allowed for learners to build onto their transfer into their project prototypes. Below are some responses 2A students had in regard to their learning experiences at Scienceworks.

Manuth- The learning I experienced at Scienceworks was how people used forces in a lot of games. For example, we played a game where we couldn’t let the ball touch the ground. Some people pushed the ball upwards, backwards and forwards.

Aaradhya- When we did the climbing wall, you had to push yourself up with your legs and pull yourself up with your arms.

Aadhavan- The air cannon had a delayed action for pull and a rapid action for push. That is because you must pull back slowly to gather the air and the air is released quickly with a push.

Anishka- On the Scienceworks excursion, we learned about push and pull forces! For example, when I pulled the wooden shape, it made the colours spread and change.

Shlok- When we played “Keepy- Uppy” ball game the presenter threw a ball at us and it was among us. We kept the ball up by keeping on pushing the ball to each other for a long time without touching the ground.

Theo- The learning I experienced at Scienceworks seeing how people used forces in games and toys.

Aiyana- At Scienceworks I experienced forces when I moved the wheelchair. I used push.

Arjun- One of the experiences at Scienceworks was observing a ball bounce in slow motion. The gravity made the ball drop and the ground pushed the ball ack up.

Sanvi- I learnt about forces push and pull. I did the running race, 3, 2, 1 GO! I ran so fast.

Oliver- In the snowflake machine, I learnt about turbulence and how it moves the flakes in the air.
