EAL Students Explore Bushfires Through Informative Writing
Our EAL (English as an Additional Language) students have been working hard on developing their writing skills by focusing on information reports, with a particular spotlight on the topic of bushfires. This unit has allowed students to build their understanding of the structure of an information report, including how to organise their writing into a title, introduction, factual paragraphs, and conclusion.
Throughout the unit, students have explored topic-specific vocabulary, learning to use terms such as flammable, evacuation, firefront, and firefighters correctly in their writing. They loved diving into spelling strategies and expanding their vocabulary using creative tools like word webs—visually mapping out related words and concepts to help strengthen their ideas and sentences. These colourful webs were a highlight of the learning, with students showing focus and creativity as they built their vocabulary banks.
We’ve seen wonderful concentration, effort, and learning as students researched facts, discussed ideas, and constructed their reports. They’ve shown great pride in their work, and it’s been fantastic to watch their confidence grow as they develop as writers. Well done to all our EAL students!
