Future Nanotechnology Excursion
Year 9 STEM Program
On Tuesday, 1 July, the Year 9 STEM elective students attended Quantum Victoria to participate in the Materials of the Future event, where they explored the fascinating world of nanotechnology and its applications in both commercial and biomedical fields.
During the excursion, students investigated the properties of nanomaterials and nanofluids, examining the fundamental principles that underpin their behaviour.
They applied scientific methodology to synthesise nanoparticles and explored the real-world applications of Shape Memory Alloy Nitinol. Additionally, they tested the properties of hydrophobic and hydrophilic materials through engaging hands-on experiments.
This excursion complemented the students' classroom learning, as they have been studying nanotechnology in their STEM elective. The experience helped consolidate their understanding of this rapidly advancing field of science.
Students were especially excited about the opportunity to conduct experiments typically reserved for Year 12, including the synthesis of gold nanoparticles. At the end of the day, they gave the event a 5 out of 5 rating, with many highlighting the hands-on learning and advanced equipment as a highlight of the day.
