Hands-on entrepreneurial skills on show
Year 8 ICT & Business
To wrap up Tuesday with a burst of energy and creativity, the Year 8 ICT & Business class jumped into the Marshmallow Tower Challenge during periods 5 and 6.
The brief? Build the tallest free-standing structure possible in just 20 minutes – using only dried spaghetti, some tape, and their entrepreneurial minds – to support a single marshmallow perched on top.
Easy? Not quite!
There was cautious planning and strong teamwork, plenty of creative structures and ideas, as well as some spaghetti-related engineering crises... But through all the chaos came some truly impressive towers and plenty of laughter.
This hands-on challenge tied perfectly into our exploration of entrepreneurial traits in the Year 8 ICT & Business curriculum. Students are learning about what drives successful entrepreneurs, and this activity gave them the chance to live out those enterprising skills in real time.
Creativity, teamwork, communication, resilience, and problem-solving were all tested – with time at the end for all students to reflect on their towers and snack on some leftover marshmallows too.
It was fantastic to see students so engaged, working together with purpose and enthusiasm. Whether they built the tallest tower or watched it bend and collapse in spectacular fashion, everyone walked away with valuable insights and a smile (plus a few marshmallows in front of the digital open fire!)
