Year 3 - Middle Unit

Welcome to Term 3! We hope that everyone was able to have a restful break, although it sounds as if there were many illnesses lurking about these holidays. We hope that those of you who were unwell are feeling better now.
We are looking forward to the Wild Action Zoo incursion next week on the 8th August. If you haven’t consented and paid via Compass, we ask that you do so at your earliest convenience. The session will be a great opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of animal life cycles through a hands-on experience.
Here is a snapshot of what we have been working on:
Inquiry
This term we are looking at the question ‘How do living things grow, change and interact within ecosystems?’. The Year 3 students have already started researching the life cycles of humans and chosen animals and their research will form the basis for several activities moving forward.
This term there will be a home project component to our inquiry topic. Please stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks.
Literacy
Over the past fortnight, the Year 3 students have been practising summarising of non fiction texts. Identifying keywords and the main idea are key to this process. They have used these skills to research information about a chosen animal and record it in their own words.
During our Writing sessions, the Year 3 students have been analysing the plots of narrative texts to identify how authors build tension before the climax (the main problem) of the story. They have begun to create a narrative to practise their own ‘build up’ to the main problem.
Numeracy
The Year 3 students have begun and will continue to explore multiplication and division over the coming weeks. They have practised creating arrays and recording the corresponding repeated addition and multiplication equations. They are deepening their understanding of inverse operations and the relationship between factors.
The W.P.S. Book Week dress up day and open morning is on Wednesday the 20th August. We look forward to seeing the creativity of our Year 3 students!
