Foundation Unit

Welcome back to Term 3. It was lovely to see everyone back at school and to hear all about what the students did over the break.

Students have excitedly discussed three new trigraphs during our Phonics lessons this week - ear, air, and ure. It was a bit trickier to compile a word list for these sounds, but the students had a growth mindset as they tackled some of these more challenging trigraphs. We will be looking for these trigraphs in our texts as we read as well.

This week in our Reading lessons students have been learning to make inferences. Students use picture clues and their own knowledge to understand what is happening in the text. We have also been learning about questioning, and how to ask questions that are relevant to the texts we are reading. Each Foundation class has been reading a lot of books on the topic of weather, as this links in with our Inquiry topic for the term.

In Writing, students have been collecting key words from a text and using these key words when writing a factual sentence. The students were very excited to use environmental print to help them write words like ‘meteorologist’ in their sentences!

In Maths, we have started to explore the topic of addition. Students have been learning to count on from the largest number using concrete materials and record number sentences. We have also looked at verbalising our own worded problems. Students have created sentences such as “If there were 5 ladybugs in my garden, and 6 more joined, how many ladybugs are there altogether?”

Finally, next week (Wednesday 6th August) we are excited to celebrate 100 days of Prep. Students are encouraged to dress up as 100 year olds. Students will participate in activities to do with ‘100’ throughout the day.

If you have any questions about the day, please email your child’s classroom teacher.
