District Athletic Sports

60 students from Grades 3-6 represented the school last Tuesday at the Deborah District Athletic Sports. The weather was perfect and the quality of competition was excellent. It was great to see our students trying hard and competing to the best of their ability.

We had a number of outstanding individual results, however it was our relay teams that stood out on the day – with 6 of our 8 teams winning their respective events. Congratulations to our 10 Years Boys, 10 Years Girls, 11 Years Girls and 12 Years Girls who have won through to the next level of competition. Our 9 Years Girls and Boys also won their events, however 9 years don’t progress any further than District level. Our 11 Years Boys were unlucky to be pipped right on the finish line, however they should be very proud of the efforts in coming second.

All students should be congratulated for their exceptional efforts and behaviour on the day.

Based on their results from the Sports, we now have a number of students who have qualified to represent the school at the Sandhurst Division Athletic Sports on Monday the 15th of September (last week of Term 3). We will inform students of their selection once all of this information comes to hand.

Sandhurst Division Netball

Well done to all of the students who represented the school at the Sandhurst Division Netball tournament last Wednesday. The standard of competition was very high and our teams are to be congratulated for the quality of netball they played throughout the day.

Our Grade 6 Girls team had successful day and were competitive in all of their games. Out of their 6 games, they had 2 wins and 2 loses to finish 3rd overall in their pool. The girls displayed great skill, teamwork and sportsmanship throughout the day and should be very proud of their efforts. I would sincerely like to thank Yas Colley for coaching this team.

Our Grade 6 Boys team also had a great day. For all of the boys, this was their first time playing competitive netball and they learnt a lot as the day went on. They played the game in great spirit and had lots of fun. I would sincerely like to thank Ms Byron for coaching this team.

Sandhurst Division Football

Congratulations to both or Senior Boys and Girls Football teams who represented the school last week Thursday.

The Boys team also had a particularly successful day, winning 5 of their 7 games in what proved to be a very strong competition. Their only losses for the day came against the eventual competition winners – Marist College, and White Hill PS (with a kick after the siren). The boys displayed fantastic teamwork and attack on the ball all day and should be very proud of their efforts. Thank you to Mr Crawford for coaching this team.

The Girls team also had a great day and were competitive in all of their games. For most of the girls, this was the first time they have played competitive football and they were able to pick up the rules and pace of the game very quickly. It was a pleasure to coach such an enthusiastic and well-behaved group of girls – well done!

Interschool Sporting Events

We have a number of students representing SGPS in sporting events in the coming weeks. Good luck to all of them. These events include:

Thursday 14th August – Region Hockey (Girls)

Tuesday 19th August – Region Soccer (Girls)

Friday 5th September - Boys and Girls Division Basketball

All students involved in these events have been informed of their selection and further information can be found on the Compass Parent Portal.

Auslan News

Our Prep students have continued practising signs related to the topic About Me. Vocabulary includes: Hair – curly, wavy, straight, long, short, fringe, and colours such as black, red, brown, and blonde. Eyes – brown, blue, green, grey, and hazel (hazel is fingerspelled).

They have completed an About Me worksheet to practise signing simple sentences for the class, including how to sign their age (by touching the nose and then signing the Auslan number). They also created self-portraits to practise signing their eye colour, hair style, and hair colour, for their peers to interpret.

Students in Grades 1–4 have been applying their knowledge of fingerspelling to the Days of the Week: Monday to Saturday, and have been learning the special sign for Sunday. The Grade 3–4 students especially enjoyed practising the Days of the Week through a computer game, signing the days as they progressed through the levels.

Grades 1–4 have also been learning signs and simple sentences related to the topic of Weather. Key vocabulary includes: sun/sunny, clouds, windy, rain, hail, snow, storm, lightning, thunder, temperature, hot, cold, warm, and degrees. They have been learning to ask about the weather and sign a simple description for any given day.

Grade 1–2 students have been using a 7-day forecast of Spring Gully’s weather to practise signing the days and conditions. Grade 3–4 students are working towards creating their own 3-day weather forecast for Spring Gully, which they will sign as part of their Learning Tasks later in the term.

Grade 5–6 students have been revising signs in the topic About Me and are now signing information about themselves in a social context. This includes:

  • Birthday (month, date, year born)
  • Hobbies and interests
  • Loves, likes, and dislikes
  • Favourites (animals, sports, seasons, subjects, movies, books)
  • Eye colour, hair colour and style
  • Family members, friends
  • Cuisine (e.g., Thai, Indian, Chinese, Mexican, Italian)
  • Places to visit (beach, mountains, snow, forest, overseas)

Under the theme "I Am a Unique Work of Art," students are signing sentences about themselves in small groups, for their peers to interpret.
