Engagement & Wellbeing

Resilience, Rights & Respectful Relationships:

This week in Respectful Relationships, 5/6 Byron explored how gender norms are passed on through social and cultural practices. We discussed examples such as the clothing that people wear, hobbies they take part in and the types of sports they are encouraged to play.

We then imagined a world where everyone had the power to create a gender-fair, gender-safe and gender-inclusive society. Students shared thoughtful ideas about ensuring equal opportunities, breaking down stereotypes and celebrating diversity in all areas of life. This activity encouraged us to think critically about the influences around us and how we can each play a part in making positive change.

This term, our 1/2 classes have been busy shining a spotlight on our School Values and revisiting what they look like in action around our school.

In our ‘expectations blitz’, students have been reminded of the importance of following our shared agreements to keep our school safe, happy and welcoming for everyone. The 1/2 students have been highly engaged in these conversations, often driving the ‘expectation’ that is focused on during our Yarning Circle.

Here are some of the expectations that we have discussed:

  • We follow the oval timetable so everyone gets a fair turn.
  • We all walk on pathways to keep ourselves and others safe.
  • We put our rubbish in the correct bins to care for our environment.
  • We clean up after ourselves to show pride in our school.
  • We use only sticks and rocks to build, ensuring safe and creative play.
  • We share play and sports equipment with others so everyone can join in.
  • We can use the friendship seat to find a buddy if we are feeling left out.
  • We seek help when we need it to keep small problems from becoming big ones.

Hats are back!

As a proud SunSmart school, students will be asked to wear broad-brimmed hats or bucket hats outside from Monday 11th August. This is in line with the Cancer Council’s SunSmart recommendation that hats be worn from mid-August through to the end of April. Although it may not feel like hat weather, UV levels can still be damaging on cool, cloudy days.

Staff will spend the first few days reminding students of this change. Following this, students without an appropriate hat will be required to remain in the shaded area around the hub during lunch and recess.

Too much of the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation can cause sunburn, skin and eye damage and skin cancer. UV damage accumulated during childhood and adolescence is associated with an increased risk of skin cancer later in life. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in Australia. It is also one of the most preventable cancers. You can’t see or feel the sun’s UV. Whatever the weather, if the UV levels are three or more, it’s important to Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide!

Families are encouraged to access the daily local sun protection times via the SunSmart widget on the school’s website, free SunSmart app, sunsmart.com.au or bom.gov.au.

Hats may be purchased from our uniform supplier, Noone.

Noone's hours are Monday to Friday 9 am-5 pm and Saturday 9 am-12 pm.
