Book Week Update...

Grade 5/6 Book Week Incursion

Grade 5 and 6's are receiving a very special opportunity this coming Monday the 18th August, with a visit from Alice, from Grow Your Mind, to celebrate Book Week.

Grow Your Mind is a social and emotional wellbeing program, and they are celebrating their new award-winning children's chapter book: 'How to Be a Fantastic Sensational Good Enough Kid".

Alice will be delivering a free incursion to our Grade 5 and 6 students, called 'Replacing Screen Time with Green Time", to support student mental health and wellbeing.

Thank-you to Em C for organising this opportunity for our students!

If you'd like more information follow the link below to learn more about their book.

Book Week (Week 5) (Repeated from last Newsletter)

It’s that’s time of year again when we dust off the hot glue gun and put together a costume to celebrate Book Week. This year, Book Week will be celebrated from Monday 18th to Friday 22nd August, and the 2025 theme is Book an Adventure! 2025 is a milestone year, celebrating 80 years of the Australian Children’s Book Week!

We have organised 2 family events for the week:

  • On Monday 18th August from 8.45am to 9.00am our school will open our libraries and classrooms for families to read a story book with their child/ren. Our Grade 5/6s will then move on to an activity with their younger buddies.
  • The second activity will be held on Friday 22nd August for our annual whole-school book parade. This will be held in The Hub at 9am. We encourage all students to dress up as their favourite book character on this day.

This fortnight...

In the Classroom

What a jam-packed and energetic fortnight it has been in (and out of) the Grade 5/6 building! We’ve had a fantastic mix of learning and extracurricular activities that have kept everyone busy, engaged, and active.

Our students did an incredible job representing our school at last Tuesday's District Athletics Carnival. It was wonderful to see so many of them trying their best, encouraging one another, and showing great sportsmanship throughout the day.

We also had both girls and boys competing in football and netball last week. Despite the chilly mornings, the players showed grit, teamwork, and determination. The netball courts were filled with sharp passes and strong defence, while the football teams gave it their all—well done to all who participated!

In the classroom, we’ve been diving into the skill of inferring—learning how to read between the lines and make sense of what’s not directly stated in non-fiction texts. Students have been using clues in the text, combined with their own knowledge, to deepen their understanding and develop thoughtful responses. We’ve also begun exploring author bias—discussing how opinions can influence the way information is presented. It’s been great to see students becoming more critical readers and thinkers.

Our Maths focus has been on fractions—representing them in different ways, finding equivalent fractions, and applying strategies for comparing and ordering them.

As always, we encourage students to keep up with regular home reading and practice of basic number facts to support their learning across all areas.

Thanks to all parents and carers for your ongoing support.

Regards,

Grade 5/6 Team
