Excursions and
In-School-Activities Wrap up
This semester in STEM we are learning about how forces affect function in products or systems.
We have started this term by looking at Simple Machines and how they give us a Mechanical Advantage. This means that we can do things with less effort, or our effort produces more when we use a simple machine. To understand this better, we looked at Pulleys and how they give Mechanical Advantage when helping us lift or drag things.
We drew or built a model explaining how Pulleys redirect force and give mechanical advantage. We then used real pulleys to lift a 15 kg Besser Block and felt the difference when using multiple pulleys. It was far easier to lift the concrete block with two or more pulleys.
For the rest of this term, students will be designing and building different projects to learn more about forces, simple machines, complex machines and eventually investigating farming and production lines for food and fibre products.
We look forward to sharing all of our amazing STEM understanding and awesome builds with you later in the term at a whole school assembly.
Thanks for reading!
In our first week back for term 3 our year 1 students have been exploring the important themes of Country and Belonging as part of their learning in Humanities. Through stories, discussion, and art, students have been deepening their understanding of what Country means to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.
We’ve learned that Country is not just the land — it includes the sky, waters, animals, plants, and people. For First Nations Australians, Country is a living, breathing entity that holds deep cultural, spiritual, and familial connections. The children were especially interested to learn that Country “talks” to people and that caring for Country is not only a responsibility but also a way to show respect and love for the land and all living things.
Students had fun showing their artistic skills, drawing plants and animals that are native to Australia and then looking at the places that are special to them like the beach, their homes, and the park. They also reflected on their own sense of belonging to their families, communities, and those places that are special to them. Through shared discussions, the children began to appreciate that just as they belong to their homes and families, Indigenous Australians belong to Country in a deep and enduring way.
This week has supported our students in developing empathy, respect, and an appreciation for the richness of the world’s oldest living cultures. We are proud of their thoughtful reflections and the connections they are making as young learners and respectful citizens.
Welcome back to Term 3!
It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces returning to school, eager to catch up with friends and share stories from the holidays. From beach trips to bike rides and family adventures, it sounds like our Year 5 students made the most of their break!
🏛️ Civics and Citizenship: Exploring Government in Australia
This term, Year 5 is diving into the world of Australian government. We’ll be unpacking how democracy works, the roles of the upper and lower house, and how laws are created and passed.
A key highlight will be a special visit from Libby Coker, our local Federal MP, on Friday, August 1st. During her visit, students will explore topics such as:
What is democracy and why it matters?
How decisions are made in government.
The three levels of government – Federal, State and Local.
Why we need laws and how they are made.
A behind-the-scenes look at a day in Parliament.
How young people can influence change by engaging in civic action, like writing to their local MP about issues that matter to them.
This is a fantastic opportunity for students to connect what they’re learning with real-world leadership and develop a stronger understanding of the role they can play in a democratic society.
🏊♂️ Swimming Program – Week 5
Term 3 also includes our Year 5 swimming program, running in Week 5 (August 18–22). This week-long program focuses on water safety, physical fitness, and the development of life-saving skills. More than just swimming lessons, this program encourages:
Confidence in the water
Teamwork and cooperation
Discipline and resilience
Families are reminded to check Compass for permission forms and payment details. The event on Compass will close Monday, July 28.
