NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL TEAM

As Term 3 draws to a close, it’s a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the many achievements, events, and learning experiences that have shaped the past ten weeks at Mickleham Secondary College. Our students continue to impress us with their commitment, resilience, and enthusiasm, and it has been fantastic to see our school community come together in so many meaningful ways.

Staffing and Leadership for 2026

Planning for the future remains a major focus as we continue to grow. This term, we finalised recruitment for a number of key leadership positions for 2026. The calibre of the educators joining our team is outstanding, and we are confident they will bring a wealth of expertise, passion, and innovative thinking to our college. These appointments mark a significant milestone in our journey, ensuring that the structures and people are in place to support our students as our community expands.

Community Connections

We were proud to partner with the Mickleham North Community Centre and Hume City Council to host a pizza night for our students this term. Events like this are more than just social occasions; they build belonging, strengthen connections, and remind us that schools thrive when they are deeply rooted in their communities. We thank our community partners for their ongoing support and look forward to further opportunities to collaborate.

Parent–Teacher Conferences

On Thursday 28 August, we held our Parent–Teacher Conferences, which were a resounding success. The level of engagement from families was exceptional, and it was heartening to see parents, carers, and teachers working in partnership to celebrate achievements and identify future goals. These conversations are central to our mission of ensuring every student is known, supported, and challenged in their learning journey.

Academy Development

Looking ahead to 2026, exciting progress is being made on our Rugby and Cricket Academies. Much planning is happening behind the scenes to ensure these programs are not only about sport, but also about developing character, discipline, and pathways for future success. The interest already expressed from students and families has been inspiring, and we are eager to share more details as these academies take shape.

Sporting Achievements

Sport continues to be a strong and vibrant part of our college life. This term, our students competed in the Netball and Rugby finals, representing Mickleham Secondary College with pride, determination, and sportsmanship. We are proud of every student who participated, regardless of the result, as they demonstrated resilience and embodied our values both on and off the field. We are now counting down to the much-anticipated Year 7 Rugby Gala Day, held on the final day of term. This event has quickly become a highlight of our calendar, bringing together schools from across the region in a celebration of teamwork, competition, and camaraderie.

Excursions and Enrichment

Enriching experiences have been at the heart of Term 3. Our Year 7 students enjoyed a fantastic excursion to the Melbourne Zoo, engaging with wildlife and deepening their scientific knowledge in a real-world setting. We extend our thanks to our Science team for their meticulous planning and for the wonderful learning opportunities they continue to provide, including the dynamic activities organised for Science Week.

In addition, our English team delivered another memorable Book Week. It was fantastic to see so many staff and students participating in the celebrations and embracing the joy of reading. The creativity on display during the dress-up day highlighted the enthusiasm and community spirit that Book Week always inspires.

Wellbeing and R U OK? Day

On Thursday 11 September, our college will acknowledge R U OK? Day, an important reminder to pause and check in with those around us. At Mickleham, we believe that wellbeing is central to learning and growth, and this day reinforces the importance of asking meaningful questions, listening with empathy, and supporting one another. We encourage students, staff, and families to take this message into their everyday lives: a simple conversation can make a powerful difference.

Looking Ahead

As we approach the September holidays, I want to thank our staff, students, and families for their continued commitment and contributions to our college community. Term 3 has been filled with growth, achievement, and memorable experiences, and Term 4 promises to be just as dynamic. A reminder that Monday 7 October is a student free day, with all students resuming class on Tuesday 7 October.

I wish everyone a safe, restful break, and I look forward to seeing our students return refreshed and ready to finish the year strongly.
