Region Cross Country: By Lulu
Last week on the 12th of June, regional cross country was held at the Yarra Glen racecourse. Keira, Indi, Alex, Rooke and myself all represented our school in the Eastern Metro cross country.
The air was pretty fresh and the sun was shining and it seemed like the perfect weather for a race but soon I got really hot. The Yarra Glen racecourse was a very difficult course because it had a very big hill to run up and down and had lots of pot-holes which made many people trip over. I was lucky enough to not trip but I did see many people fall over.
Everyone from LPS had a great race and represented our school so well. Indi and Keira had a great run in the 9-10 and I came 26th, Rooke came 13th which means he’s a reserve to qualify for the state finals. Alex came 10th which means Alex will be qualifying for the state finals in July!
Mr Thomas said that in all his time in teaching, nobody has ever qualified for State Cross Country. Congratulations to everyone who participated in the cross country team for LPS.
HOOPTIME: By Jess and Roman
On Wednesday the 18th of June, Grade 5 and 6 students met in the Senior School ready to leave for the State Basketball Center. My team was Lucy G, Jemma G, Lucy H, Macey B, Chloe L, Lacey M, Abigail L, Kaeley B, and me. We had two games, one against Heathmont East which we won, and then another against our own Lysterfield team which we also won. After we won against both of them, they had to play and whatever team won we would play in the grand final. Heathmont East ended up winning so we played them in the grand final. We were all so fired up, and it definitely looks like it worked because we ended up winning and making it to division.
The teams that made it through were the three Future Stars Girls, All Stars Girls, and All Stars Boys. Thank you Mr Thomas for organising this day for us and making this day possible. By Jess
9:00 am on Wednesday 18th of June, the grade 5s and grade 6’s went to the State Basketball Center to play hooptime. It was really fun and 5 out of 7 teams won the grand final. The first game of the day was at 9:30am. All the All Star teams played 5 games and the Future Stars played around 3 to 4 games. The event was really exhilarating and all the other schools were challenging to play against. The First game for the All Star boys was against ourselves - the other LPS team! The game ended in a draw - 14 all, and both teams were hungry for a win over each other. After the draw, both All Star teams didn't lose a single game until the Grand Final. The Future Star boys were also on a roll too, some Future Star boy’s teams didn’t lose a game. Three All Star teams went to the Grand Final and three Future Star teams made the Grand Final. The girls All Stars won the Grand Final and Lysterfield Red won the boys Hooptime Grand Final in a rematch vs ourselves. FROM ROMAN
Learning in Action
Word Work: By Alex
In Word Work we have been looking at mob(e)-mote-move. These Latin bases means for something to be able to move. These bases can be used in words like mobile (something to be able to move), remove (to be able to move something away) and motel (a place to move into and then move away from). We also learnt the difference between irremovable and immovable. Irremovable is something that is unable to be removed or taken away and immovable is something that can not be moved. We continued to review pel-pulse words too.
Literature Unit: By Roman
Our literature unit on 'Us Mob' has come to an end! The students have completed the book that has spanned over 9 weeks. We are currently creating a character profile on 'Ruby' who was the main character in this book. Whilst reading 'Us Mob', the book explores perspectives and stories from Ruby's life and what she experienced over the span of her life.
We have completed a lot of work on sentence level writing. We have been understanding how to use independent and dependent clauses effectively and how we can change them in our writing. We have been experimenting with subordinating conjunctions 'once, while, when, whenever, where, wherever, before, and after' and looking at where we can place them in a sentence.
Vocabulary: By Alex
In vocabulary, we have been focusing on words from Us Mob.
The most recent words we have been learning are spindly, eternity and intensely.
Spindly def.
Something/someone that is tall and thin or slender.
Eg. ‘The spindly reeds beside the pond made for a perfect habitat for frogs.’
Spindly: Adjective (describing word)
Eternity def.
For something to last forever or being endless.
Eg. ‘The journey to the top of the mountain seemed to last for eternity as I became a straggler behind the rest of the tour group.’
Eternity: Noun (Person place or thing)
Intensely def.
To do something with force or strength.
Eg. ‘The child stares intensely at the rainbow lollipop, mouth watering.’
Intensely: Adverb (describes a dong word)
Literacy Preview:
The Grade 6 students will be completing a Knowledge Rich unit on 'Celebration of Different Cultures' starting on Monday. They will also be completing a two week unit on Poetry exploring a range of different poems and then completing and publishing one or two for their Scrap Book Projects. The types of poetry they will be exposed to are tanka, cinquain, limerick, haiku, diamante, free verse and biographical.
Mathematics: By Roman
During Mathematics this fortnight we have continued our work on division. We have looked at a wide range of strategies used to solve numbered or worded problems. Each Grade 6 student has continued their individual division goal that is specific to where they are on their learning journey.
In our Applied Unit we have started designing an outdoor play space. In small groups the students have to use measurement to solve the area and perimeter of their outdoor space. As the project continues you will then have to calculate the volume and capacity of a pool that you will design yourself.
Moving forward:
Grade 6 will be concluding their work on division and their measurement applied projects.
