Learning in Action

Literacy

In Literacy, all of the Grade 5 students have been learning about and writing poems. We have based our poems on a place we really enjoy like the beach, snow or a forest. The tricky part is the structure of the stanzas. We have to follow the pattern of ABABCC and we have to follow that for four stanzas while having an extra challenge of adding personification and alliteration.

We have made a lot of progress in our poems and here are some stanzas written by 5HA students:

The angry waves crashed loudly.

The people had stuffed themselves and eaten.

The happy seagulls were squawking madly.

The angry crabs pinched people for no reason.

The joyful sand fried my feet.

While the kids got a treat.

By Codey and Phoenix

The beach is shining like a diamond today,

So, I rest in the scorching sun smiling while I get tanned.

After that, in the immobilized sand I play,

And then my parents are ready to be fanned.

I go for a quick swim in the refreshing sea,

Then I see a British man drinking tea.

By Joelle, Aekam and Justin

The red and orange autumn leaves are rustling,

As the tired sun is setting,

The sprightly squirrels are bustling,

While the birds happily are nesting,

The whispering breeze,

Is just too cold I could freeze!

By Alaya and Izzy

Preview for Learning:

As part of our Knowledge Rich focus, we will be learning about different celebrations across different cultures, culminating in our Cultural Celebration Day.

Maths

In Maths, we have been learning about mass. We have used scales to weigh things and find out how much it weighs compared to other objects. We had a challenge to get as close to a measurement in grams as possible. We also converted grams into kilograms when required.

We are also coming to the end of our unit on division. We have explored various strategies, including exploding dots, connecting multiplication and division, the traditional algorithm, and bundled grouping.

Preview for Learning:

We will continue to be learning about measuring capacity, whilst also reviewing our learning of division.

Hoop Time

Hoop Time was on the June 18th for Senior School students. A lot of people went but the students who stayed back had a load of fun, measuring what Shapes boxes would be the best to buy (it was fun eating them after too). We won't say more because Joelle and Raphael will be sharing more about it at school assembly. While we had fun at school, let's hear from some people who went to Hoop Time:

Maisie: I liked hanging out with my teammates and running around on the court. A memorable moment was cheering for the All Star girls when they were in the Grand Final.

Ava B: I liked playing different schools and it was fun playing with different people.

Quentin: I enjoyed winning the Grand Final and helping my team. Thanks to my mum and dad for helping out my team.

Jemma: I liked being in the team with some of my friends and playing with new people. It was great seeing people shoot goals and having a day away from school.

Asha: It was fun because I like playing basketball and my teammates were really nice. We won a few games and lost a few, but it didn't matter because it was really fun for everyone.

Austin: It was fun getting the 2 buckets I scored in the 3rd game and swished them, then we ended up winning by 24 points. Good job, everyone!

Thank you to all of the wonderful coaches, scorers, helpers and spectators.
