Weekly Timetable

Hoop Time

It was fantastic to see the enthusiasm and engagement of our students at Hoop Time last week. We congratulate the All Stars girls team, who won their grand final - a fantastic result! Well done to the Future Stars teams and All Stars boys team, who made it into their grand final as well on the day. Huge thank you to Mr Thomas for organising such a great day.

Learning in Action

Literacy

This fortnight in Literacy, students finished their poetry unit. They have explored the poems ‘The Eagle’ by Alfred Tennessy and ‘Who Has Seen The Wind’ by Christina Rossetti. Students focused on including personification in their poetry in order to engage the reader and explored rhyming within stanzas.  Students took on the challenge of creating their own poem that included an interesting simile and followed an appropriate rhyming pattern.

In Word Work this fortnight, students continued to explore Latin numbers and compare whether these were similar or different to the Greek numbers that we focused on previously. They have defined, decoded and spelt ‘un’. We introduced some new ‘Weird Words’, including ‘region’ and ‘view’.

During Knowledge Rich sessions, students began to learn about different celebrations around the world. We discussed what a celebration is, different celebrations around the world, and the celebrations that we share with our family and friends. It was great to hear about some of the ways in which our students celebrate, including breakfast in bed on birthdays, watching fireworks on New Years Eve, and going on an Easter egg hunt.

Preview: During the next fortnight we will continue our focus on Latin numbers in Word Word, learn more about celebrations around the world during Knowledge Rich, and students will finalise and publish a writing piece of their choice.

Maths

Just a quick note to say that a lot of the upcoming strategies and concepts are going to start involving students thinking multiplicatively. We will have a strong focus on multiplication in term 3, however it does cross over into other concepts. We have seen from daily reviews that many students are struggling with multiplication, it would be great if we can get your support at home to have the students begin practising their times tables. This will aid the students in maths for the rest of the year. We greatly appreciate your support on this.

This fortnight in Maths, students completed a review of our addition and subtraction units. They engaged in games and problem solving tasks as a way to practice the strategies they have worked on this term.

One of the games that has been very popular with students is called ‘Salute’. The instructions are shown below for those families who may enjoy playing this at home.

Students also completed their Time unit, where they completed a variety of activities that directly related to their learning goal. Our main areas of learning for this unit were half past/quarter past and to, understanding time to 5 and 1 minute intervals, as well as elapsed time and 24 hour time.

Preview: Students will continue to review their addition and subtraction knowledge, before beginning their multiplication unit in Term 3.
