Literacy
Students have continued to explore the text, ‘Finding Our Heart’, this fortnight, watching a video of the author, Thomas Mayo, explaining his purpose behind writing the book and his hope that students will have discussions with their families about it. Students have also read some non-fiction texts to increase their background knowledge about First Nations people and their culture.
Students discussed personal response texts, and how they should reflect your thoughts, feelings and interpretations when engaging with a text. They also looked at how personal responses are based on a person’s unique perspective, experiences and emotions. Students then began to draft their own personal response to ‘Finding Our Heart’ in the form of a book report, and were then encouraged to revise their writing by adding more specific details, using transition words, and adding appositives. They were also encouraged to check their use of punctuation throughout their writing. Finally, they discussed how to appropriately read their writing aloud, focusing on tone, volume, pitch and pace.
During grammar lessons, students focused on adverbials, and how they can add more information to sentences by telling the reader where, when or how something happened. In Word Work, students have looked at the ie vs ei spelling pattern, as well as reading and spelling words where ‘o’ is making the /u/ sound, like in the word 'some'.

Next fortnight, students will begin a Knowledge Rich unit, ‘Celebration of Different Cultures.’ This unit will explore what a celebration is, what some family/religious/cultural celebrations people celebrate are, and make connections to our literature unit, ‘Finding Our Heart,’ about First Nations’ culture.
Maths
Students continued to learn about different subtraction strategies this fortnight. They explored how to use the vertical strategy to solve subtraction problems with 3-digit numbers, including some where regrouping was necessary. They then moved on to solving 3-digit problems where there were internal zeros in the number, requiring more regrouping when solving them using the vertical strategy.
Capacity was also explored as a concept, with students estimating, measuring, comparing and ordering containers based on the total capacity of mL or L they could hold.
Grade 3 students also used their problem solving skills to help them solve a range of different visual and worded problems.

In the upcoming fortnight, students will revise all of the strategies they have learnt this term to help them solve addition and subtraction problems. They will be using worded problems, focusing on pulling out important information first and identifying what the question is asking. They can then use their choice of strategy to solve the problem. Students will also be revising data and graphing.
Wellbeing
This fortnight, students have discussed personal strengths and matched them to famous characters that they believe embody that strength. Students have also discussed what it means to be kind and to be strong, and how they are both important aspects of being a good friend. They have created a heart craft, with one side representing kindness and the other representing strength, and then swapped one of their halves with a partner to create a strong and kind friendship heart.

For the rest of the term, students will be given a challenge of being a Friendship Ninja Spotter. Students will be encouraged to keep an eye out for any acts of kindness and super friendship skills being used by their classmates and other students, both in the classroom and out in the yard. They will then be sharing these examples with their class.
Hooptime
On Friday the 13th June, the Grade 3s took part in their very first Middle School Hooptime competition. The students were full of excitement and enthusiasm as they headed to the State Basketball Centre. It was wonderful to see them encouraging one another both on and off the court, especially showing great support to those who were new to the game. A big congratulations to all the teams who achieved multiple wins, and well done to every student for showing great sportsmanship and giving it their best effort!
Student Reports
At Hooptime on Friday the year 3s and 4s played basketball for the day at the State Basketball Centre. The first game that the Rookies played was the most fun because we played against the other Lysterfield Rookies team. The All Stars girls favourite game was the grand final because it was a tough and a challenging game but we won against Blackburn so we made it to the next round. All students agreed that it was a fabulous day, and everyone had the best time! Well done Lysterfield.
We would like to thank teachers and parents who volunteered their time to be our coaches.

Our first go at Hooptime was great. My number was 79. Although we lost all our games and only got 2 points, we had fun and that’s the main thing. We tried our best. I cannot wait for next time!

On Friday 13th of June, the grade 3 and 4s went to Hooptime. We played against many other schools. We won a few and we lost few but the main thing was to try your best and have fun. The day was a big success. Well done Lysterfield!

On Friday, we went to Hooptime at the state basketball centre with all the threes and fours. It was so much fun. The first game was our best game and our favourite. We played St Simon’s in the second game which was close being 2 to 0. We sadly lost the grand final against Blackburn. Thank you to the parent helpers that coached us and supported us. Also thank you to the parents that came to watch us!
