Chaplain's Corner

As we journey through the Church calendar, we are blessed to encounter the radiant examples of two groups of saints whose lives shine as beacons for us today: the Holy Unmercenary Saints (like Saints Cosmas and Damian) and the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, whose feast day we celebrate on 29 June. Each offers a different but deeply united, vision of how to live a life rooted in Christ.

The Unmercenary Saints were physicians who offered healing freely, never charging for their services. Saints Cosmas and Damian, Panteleimon, and others treated the sick out of love for Christ and neighbour, not personal profit.

Why they matter today:

· In a world where success is often measured by wealth or achievement, the Unmercenaries remind us that service and compassion are higher callings.

· They teach us to use our gifts, whether it’s medicine, teaching, helping, or even listening, not for personal gain, but for the glory of God and the good of others.

How we can be like them:

· Help others without expecting anything in return.

· Offer a kind word, a prayer, or support to someone in need.

· Consider how your future career or studies can be used in service of Christ and others.

Saint Peter the fisherman and Paul the former persecutor of Christians are an unlikely pair, yet the Church honours them together, showing the power of God's grace. Peter, full of love and sometimes fear, was called to strengthen the Church. Paul, once Saul, had his heart transformed and preached Christ boldly across the world.

Why they matter today:

· Both were imperfect men, yet were transformed by Christ’s love. This reminds us that God can use us, despite our fears, failures, or past mistakes.

· They boldly proclaimed the truth of the Gospel in the face of persecution, something still needed today.

How we can be like them:

· Stand up for your faith with courage, even when it’s not popular.

· Seek unity and forgiveness in our school, families, and friendships.

· Be open to God transforming your life, even if you feel unworthy.

These saints challenge us not only to believe in Christ but to live for Him, with love, with boldness, and with integrity. Whether through small acts of kindness or courageous steps of faith, their lives point us toward a higher purpose.

May the lives of these saints guide our hearts, minds, and actions in our families, studies, friendships, relationships and beyond.

With love and prayers,
