Middle School Students Create Powerful Mural for Round Square Global Challenge
If you walk past the Visual Arts Gallery in the Middle School, you’ll notice a colourful and meaningful new display: a mural of handprints created by our students as part of the Round Square Global Challenge. This vibrant piece, made entirely from student tracings in Oakleigh Grammar House colours, is more than just art - it’s a celebration of unity, diversity, and international mindedness.
Each student traced and cut out their own handprint in their House colour and reflected on the values of inclusion and global citizenship by writing a personal message on their hand. The mural proudly showcases our school’s commitment to the Round Square IDEALS and encourages students to ask powerful questions such as:
- Why is it important for people from different backgrounds to feel included?
- How can we show we are part of a global community?
- Why are all our hands being used together in this mural?
Together, the hands form a collective artwork that symbolises how we are all different, yet united, both at Oakleigh Grammar and in the world.
In addition to the mural, students participated in a shared sustainability action by writing an Environmental Pledge. These pledges, ranging from “I will bring a reusable water bottle” to “I will pick up litter around my school”, are now proudly displayed in each Home Group classroom and will be revisited throughout the year.
This inspiring project highlights the strength of collaboration and the importance of action, reflection, and responsibility in shaping a more inclusive and sustainable future.
