Hellenic Culture

At Oakleigh Grammar, our connection to Hellenic culture and Orthodox Christian values is deeply rooted in our school community. Throughout Term 2, students and staff actively participated in a series of meaningful events that celebrated and honoured our spiritual heritage.

On Wednesday, 11 June 2025, a group of selected Middle School students, along with the Faith Leaders of the Junior School, had the privilege of attending the Name Day celebration of His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.  The service was held at the Archdiocesan Church of Saint Eustathios at South Melbourne and was a significant spiritual experience. The students represented our school with respect. Following the service, students and staff were invited to a special lunch, where they had the opportunity to reflect on the day and engage with members of the clergy.

Our school community also came together to honour our patron saints, Sts Anargiri, during their Feast Day celebrations. On Monday evening, 30 June 2025, selected students from the Junior, Middle and Senior Schools attended the Vespers service at Sts Anargiri Church in Oakleigh.  This beautiful evening service marked the beginning of the Feast Day observance and highlighted the importance of the saints’ selfless dedication to healing and compassion, values we strive to emulate at Oakleigh Grammar.

The following morning, on Tuesday 1 July 2025, selected Year 8 students as well as the School Byzantine Choir participated in the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy for the Feast Day of Sts Anargiri at the same parish.  Students joined in the liturgical service with respect and enthusiasm, representing the school with pride.

Through these events, our students continue to grow in their understanding and appreciation of the Orthodox faith and Hellenic traditions.  We are proud of their involvement and their commitment to upholding the spiritual values that form the foundation of our school identity.
