NAIDOC Week 2025

Ideas for Celebrating NAIDOC Week

NAIDOC Week falls during the school holidays, so the Koorie School Improvement Team (SIT) wanted to send out some information and activities you could do at home.

NAIDOC Week 2025, running from 6 – 13 July, will celebrate "The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy". This year, NAIDOC Week also marks the 50th anniversary of the celebration. The theme focuses on the strength of young leaders, the vision of communities, and the legacy of ancestors, all while honouring the achievements of the past.

Here's how NAIDOC Week 2025 can be celebrated.

Learning about the theme

Explain to your children that "The Next Generation" refers to the future leaders and community members who will carry on the important work of NAIDOC Week.

Connect to personal experiences

Ask your children to think about their own strengths, the visions they have for the future, and the legacy they want to leave behind.

Share stories

Discuss stories of Indigenous leaders and communities, both past and present, to highlight their strength, vision, and legacy.

Activities and events

Attend local NAIDOC Week events. Many communities and organisations will hold events for children, such as family fun days, art workshops, and cultural performances.

Learn about Indigenous art and culture

Participate in art workshops where kids can learn about traditional Indigenous art forms, such as dot painting, storytelling, and carving. The NGV – Ian Potter Centre is well worth a visit.

Explore Indigenous music and dance

Introduce children to Indigenous music and dance, either through listening to traditional songs, learning basic dance steps, or attending performances.

Read books about Indigenous stories

Share books about Indigenous history, culture, and contemporary experiences with your children.

Engage in discussions

Talk about the importance of understanding and respecting Indigenous cultures and perspectives.
