Update from our Careers Adviser

This term has been busy for Careers, and it's exciting to see so many students over the age of 15 taking advantage of the EPP 'Start Your Future' program. This initiative provides a preview of EVET courses available to Year 11 students at TAFE. It allows students to explore potential career paths in various fields, including electrotechnology, barbering, beauty, cybersecurity, health, hair, makeup and nails, real estate, carpentry, and nursing, among others. The next courses will begin in Term 3, Week 2. Students will attend either Campbelltown, Macquarie Fields, Liverpool, or Miller TAFE one day a week from 9 AM to 3 PM. It's fantastic to see a significant number of students participating next term!
The Macarthur Careers Expo, held at Minto, took place on June 5. We had 78 students from Years 10 to 12 in attendance. Several exhibitors were present to engage with our students, including representatives from various universities, TAFE, the Defence Force, Police, Streets Ice Cream, Western Sydney Airport, My Gateway, and 1300 Apprenticeships, among others.
On June 11, Thomas Reddall High School hosted a full-day First Aid course for 14 Year 11 and 12 students, organised by Royal Life Saving. The qualification obtained from this course is valid for three years. The event was successful, and we look forward to offering more First Aid courses in the future.
The Western Sydney Careers Expo at Homebush will be held on Thursday, June 26. Approximately 40 students from Years 11 and 12 will attend. This larger expo will provide valuable insights for our students’ future pathways.
In Term 3, another White Card course will be available for students interested in pursuing a career in the construction field. Any students who would like to participate should see Mr. Melluish to register their interest. The course is offered at a subsidised cost of $30 and is designed for students who intend to work on construction sites. It is mandatory for all workers on construction sites to have a White Card, as the course covers essential topics related to work health and safety.
The Careers Lessons for Year 10 have been very beneficial this term. We help students obtain their USI Numbers and Tax File Numbers, prepare for subject selection night, create resumes, develop interview techniques, and get ready for work experience. We also cover work health and safety and other important topics.
Any student who is at least 14 years and 9 months old and wishes to undertake work experience can do so for one week, provided it does not conflict with key assessment tasks or examinations. Interested students should see Mr. Melluish for more information.
Subject selection is approaching in Week 4 of Term 3 for students in Years 8, 9, and 10. The Careers Team is working hard to prepare students to align their subject choices with the careers they wish to pursue after school. Year 10 students will participate in subject selection interviews and information sessions leading up to this event, allowing them to discuss their options with parents and carers at home and make informed decisions. Year 8 students will also take part in a subject information session at school. If students have any questions, they should see Mr. Melluish or Mrs. Skeggs.
