Kindergarten

Please continue reading together each night. Encourage your child to practice writing letters, decodable words, sentences and numbers at home, making sure they use the correct formation.

Initial Lit

Here are our current sounds in Initial Lit!

Dictation

Dictation is a helpful way for your child to practise hearing the sounds in words, linking them to letters, and writing them down. It builds strong connections between listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

During dictation, children listen to a word or sentence, say it aloud, and then write it. This helps them to:

  • Sound out words
  • Spell tricky or high-frequency words
  • Use correct sentence structure and punctuation

It’s a great way to reinforce what they’ve been learning in class and helps build their confidence to write independently. Below are some sentences your child can practise at home, focusing on our current sounds and tricky words!

Tricky Words

We’ve learnt even more tricky words since our last newsletter and are now officially working on our Dingo words! Please continue to revise these at home each night. As students develop their reading skills, recognising these tricky words is essential—they appear often in texts, increase reading confidence and support their overall comprehension.

Maths

For the next fortnight, we will be learning to read hour time on clocks. Students will be able to create the layout of an analog clock, read analog clocks to the hour using the term ‘o’clock’, read digital clocks to the hour using the term ‘o’clock’ and describe the position of the hands on an analog clock when reading hour time.

Tips for home:

🕐 Start making a habit of pointing out the time on a clock when events happen in your day, to introduce what that time looks like. Move on to asking your child to tell you what a certain time looks like: “What will the clock look like at 1 o’clock” (or more tricky “in 30/15 minutes” if they are able to!) or “when it’s time to play?”.

🕐 Once these basics are established, let your children remind you when it is time to do something…You may well find that they will pick this up especially easily if it’s something they’re really looking forward to, perhaps not so quickly if you’ve asked to be reminded when it’s time for bed!

🕐 Use both digital and analog clocks around the house.
