Literacy and Numeracy News
In Literacy we’ve been embedding high-impact literacy strategies across all learning areas, with an emphasis on explicit vocabulary instruction, reading comprehension, and purposeful writing to support reading and writing growth for all our students. We are continually analysing data, adapting instruction, and sharing best practices to ensure each student is making progress.
However, we know that literacy doesn’t start and stop at the school gate. One of the most powerful ways to support your child’s development is by making reading a regular part of home life. Whether it’s sharing a bedtime story, discussing a book on the drive home, or modelling a love of reading yourself, every little moment counts. When students see that reading matters both at school and at home, their motivation and confidence soar.
We are looking forward to our Book Week in Week 5. Our book character parade will take place on Monday 18 August at 9am. We can’t wait to see everyone dressed up in their favourite book characters.
In Mathematics, as Semester Two kicks off our teachers have been hard at work reflecting on our Semester One data. We've meticulously analysed student performance to identify both the strong areas where our students are excelling and the specific gaps in understanding that require more focus. This deep dive into our data is crucial; it allows us to truly understand the individual learning journeys of our students and pinpoint exactly where we can provide the most impactful support.
This thorough analysis empowers us to develop clear, achievable goals alongside our students for the coming semester. By working collaboratively, we're creating a shared vision and a well-defined path forward, ensuring every student has a clear focus for their mathematical growth. We're excited to implement targeted strategies and continue fostering a supportive learning environment that helps all our students thrive in Mathematics.
Fund Raiser for a school Digital Piano!
At St Martin De Porres we have many talented music students. This year we have a brand new Music room and space for a portable full size digital piano!
In order to procure one for the school some talented and very generous past music students have donated the funds of their weekend busking efforts!
Kai, Ian and Jay (former students), busk regularly at Victoria markets. You can find them every Sunday and some Saturdays, out there playing piano, violin, drums and guitar. Paul, Kai’s dad said they play many pieces by ear- with no music! They are all exceptionally talented.
This week Freya from Year 6 joined in with her flute. Freya also made the donation box sign. They raised $805.00 to put towards a new digital piano. We are going to have a casual clothes day for a gold coin donation this term to raise more money to put towards this cause.
We are very grateful to them for their efforts and generosity and especially would like to thank Paul for all his efforts and support.
