Level 6

We're a great mix in Level 6!

A new term means new adventures! We have had a blast coming back to school and have kicked off our learning by focusing on BIOLOGY - LIVING THINGS. This term, everything will be linked to our Inquiry topic of Biology.

Maths

Last week, we began our unit on operating with fractions. To begin this unit, the students transformed into birds and had a Battle of the Beaks! Each student chose a different tool to use as their beak (spoon, bulldog clip, peg or chopsticks). Then, the students had to forage for food (pipe cleaners, googly eyes, rubber bands, pom poms and feathers). These food items represented different types of food in the wild.

Students then collated their food data into graphs and were able to identify fraction quantities for their gathered food, and then turned these into decimal quantities and percentages.

Reading

In Reading this term we are changing things up slightly. Introducing... BOOK CLUB! Students have begun Book Clubs where, in groups, students study a book together. Each week, students pick a new Book Club role to develop their learning. This might include being the summariser, comedic commentator, perspectives predictor or various others.

Book Club books are to be kept at school and not brought home.

Inquiry Events

Because our Inquiry topic is interwoven in all subjects quite significantly this term, we have decided to have an 'event' each week which forms our focus for the week. This week we have used the Peppered Moth camouflage as our 'event'. In this, students were each given a moth to camouflage around the classroom. During this session, the class teachers swapped classes and when they re-entered their classroom, they became the bird and hunted for the moths. This was such a fun way to explore adaptations and natural selection for the week. Can you find the peppered moths in these pictures?!
