Melba

Term 3

Another fantastic term at Blackburn High School comes to an end. Well done to all Melba House students for their work, persistence, and participation across term three.

The Melba House mentor teachers have continued to do a wonderful job checking in with their students, developing connections within the mentor group, and exploring a range of important topics as part of the mentor program. Students and parents are reminded that the mentor teacher is the first point of contact at the school.

It has been great to see so many Melba House students participating in a range of extra-curricula events including musical performances, the Duke of Edinburgh camp, inter-school sport, and a range of subject specific incursions and excursions.

Our Year 12 Melba House cohort only have a week remaining in term 4 at Blackburn High School.

We encourage them to commence their exam preparation over the break and work diligently with their teachers once they have completed scheduled classes. We wish all Melba House year 12 students the very best of luck with their exams and for the years ahead, they have been a wonderful cohort who have made many positive contributions to the school.

Best wishes for the term 3 holiday period, we look forward to catching up with everyone following a well-deserved break on Monday the 2nd of October.

Melba House Fundraiser

The Melba House Fundraiser was held on Tuesday the 22nd of August. Planned, prepared and lead by the Melba House Student Leadership team, this was a fantastic whole-school event that demonstrated our school value of citizenship.

During lunchtime, students had to opportunity to participate in carnival style games and activities including cornhole, spike ball, and tug of war. A BBQ was also prepared with all sausages and drinks selling out!

Over $2,500 was raised for the Eastern Emergency Relief Network! This is a fantastic effort by the Blackburn High School community and will directly contribute to the Eastern Emergency Relief Network who supports over 150 partner agencies to provide the most vulnerable in our community with household items and food. This makes a massive difference to the quality of life for themselves and their families.

In addition to this, a non-perishable food drive was conducted by the Melba House Student Leadership team to further enhance the fundraising efforts. Over 800 food items were donated by students and staff from all houses. These food items will be utilized to prepare food hampers for distribution at Christmas time. Thank you again to all who contributed.

A representative from the Eastern Emergency Relief Network will attend Blackburn High School to collect the food items and the fundraising donation will be passed on. There is a  great sense of appreciation felt by the Eastern Emergency Relief Network towards the students and families at Blackburn High School.

Year 7 Leaders Reflections

Every year Blackburn has many activities including fundraisers, camps, mentor activities, and multiple sports days with the whole school, just to name a few. Every couple of months or so the four different houses take turns hosting a fundraiser that includes lunchtime BBQ with treats, drinks, and heaps of fun activities at lunchtime. We also wear a free dress or a theme to wear to school with a $2 donation that goes to an important course. We also have our yearly athletics day, swimming carnival, and cross country. These are fun days where all four houses compete for points to win. It is also a chance to try and compete in division and regionals against other schools. It is always a fun day filled with lots of fun. Every morning apart from Wednesdays we have a Mentor group. In the Mentor group, we do heaps of fun activities about all sorts of things. Our mentor is mixed up in all grades.

Getting into the high school was thought to be a new experience in life. Compared to primary school, high school creates a unique lifestyle, where it’s a start for students to learn to handle their time management; learn to be more independent; learn to support responsibility, and have comprehensive thinking skills. Different than primary school, students have to know their timetable on Xuno and walk into different classes for specific subjects in the high school system. Usually, despite any temporary changes, we have four periods on school days and start off with mentor groups. Students often get to go back to their lockers when recess or lunch begins and finishes.

In high school, there are multiple courses that are passionate and exciting to study. Generally, I am interested in science, maths, and humanities, where we sometimes have expos and experiments to work on, such as going to Yarra Bend Park and looking through cells and dissecting.
