Term 3

Term 3 has seen a few notable events in the Languages Faculty.

On July 20th, two teams of students from Years 10, 11, and 12 went to the French Model UN hosted at the Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership in North Carlton. Students worked for a few months researching their designated countries of Morocco and the United Kingdom.

As a team, they prepared position statements on their country’s stance on the draft resolution on protecting the environment. Together, teams came up with what issues their country believed most strongly in and prepared amendments ahead of time. The proceedings commenced with video messages from UN Secretary - General António Guterres and Victorian Minister of Education - The Honourable Natalie Hutchins.

Once at the event, the BHS students listened to the positions taken by the other countries in attendance and presented their own. (Did I mention this was to a room was well over 100 students from other schools and all in French?!)

The students worked collaboratively on amending the draft resolution, proposed amendments, found countries to support their motion, debated their stances, and voted to pass the resolution by the end of the day. It was a truly immersive and educational experience of which our students should be very proud.

Well done to Bailey Trainor, Jade Maea, Amalie Savva, Pamella Gwiza, Holly Trainor, Mia Barlow, Charlie Ford, Charlotte Arblaster, and Daniel Chin.

Year 9 German students were also treated to a delicious Currywurst meal prepared by M. Stewart!

Students learnt about the origins of one of Germany’s most popular street food! This spicy sweet treat was created as a way to liven up post-war rations and its invention is attributed to Herta Heuwer in Berlin in 1949. It is estimated that 800 million Currywursts are eaten each year! Genießen! (Enjoy!)

The Languages team would also like to acknowledge the work of Kieran Macfarlane who has stepped in and assisted with the German 7, 8, and 9 classes while Mr. Stewart is off on his long service leave.
