NAIDOC WeeKk
NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year (Sunday to Sunday), to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. As this date often falls during the school holidays, Thornbury High School celebrates this during week 2 of Term 3. The theme for this year was ‘For our Elders.’
Proud Yorta Yorta, Wiradjuri, Bungulung and Jinnabarri young woman Shi Bamblett and proud Yorta Yorta, Gunditjmara, Walpri Wiradjuri and Dja Dja Wurrung young woman Jedah Wickey (with support from Alex and Kaiaan) began the proceedings. They Acknowledgied Country, spoke about what NAIDOC means to them and the Elders they look up to. They then performed a dance inspired by Aunty Tarsh Bamblett at both Yr 9 and 10 assemblies, confidently sharing their culture with their peers. They’re already planning their next performance for Multicultural Day later this term - legends!
Following on from a successful student-led screening of 'The Sapphires' in 2022, this year, students chose to watch ‘Bran Nue Dae.’ 96 students came to enjoy the film being screened in the auditorium over 3 lunch times.
