Year 7 English

The Year 7 English course is based on the Victorian Curriculum which is organised into three interrelated strands: Language, Literature and Literacy. Together the three strands focus on developing students’ knowledge, understanding and skills in Reading and Viewing, Speaking and Listening, and Writing. The course encourages students to broaden their outlook on their world, increase their appreciation of written and multimodal forms and recognise that texts reflect different viewpoints. In addition, students will examine the Intercultural Capability which assists young people to become responsible local and global citizens. 

Language 

Students will learn to: 

• Understand the use of punctuation and grammar to support meaning in complex sentences. 
• Understand that the coherence of texts relies on devices that signal text structure and guide readers. 
• Understand how to use spelling rules. 
• Understand how language evolves to reflect a changing world. 

Literature 

Students will learn to: 

• Experiment with text structures and language features and their effects on creating literary texts. 
• Create literary texts that adapt stylistic features encountered in other texts. 
• Identify and explore ideas and viewpoints about events, issues and characters represented in texts. 
• Compare the ways that language and images are used to create a character. 

Literacy 

Students will learn to: 

• Plan, rehearse and deliver presentations.  
• Identify and discuss main ideas, concepts and points of view in spoken texts. 
• Analyse and explain the ways that text structures shape meaning and vary according to purpose and audience. 
• Use comprehension strategies to interpret, analyse and synthesise ideas and information. 
• Consolidate a personal handwriting style that is legible, fluent and automatic and supports writing for extended periods. 
• Edit for meaning. 
• Use a range of software to produce texts. 

Year 7 Accelerated and Enhanced English

Students create structured and coherent texts for a range of purposes and audiences and develop their ability to express or challenge an opinion. In addition, students will examine the Intercultural Capability which assists young people to become responsible local and global citizens.
