Sport

Mr Churchyard and Mr Gibney

As we reflect on our first uninterrupted year of Sport since 2020 it has been great to see the sheer number of students that have participated across the year, having had the largest representation of school teams entered at the division stage of the competition in the area. The sporting talent of the college is demonstrated in the generous number of teams progressing to the region stage. Over the last couple of weeks of step up we have completed our Inter School Sport try-outs for the Term 1 2024 competitions. This again reinforced the enthusiasm, passion and interest our students have for sport. It was pleasing to see such large turn outs, but what was more pleasing to see was the support and camaraderie students showed each other while competing for a place on the team. It gives us great pleasure to offer opportunities for students to represent the college, we consistently find our students ‘raise the bar’ with how they conduct themselves within the wider community. It has been a great privilege to work with a number of students and be part of the karaoke on the bus, the laughter and the triumph. We would like to congratulate all the students who have tried out for a team or represented the college, well done.

There have been so many standout moments from sport form this year, kicking off with the number of students dressed up in fancy dress or house themed dress at the athletics carnival. This plays a huge part in developing the house culture at the college as well as contributing to the overall feeling of the day. A fond memory is seeing a group of blow-up aliens running down the 100m straight in front of a cheering crowd.  We hope this continues to grow in 2024 with the addition of House Captains, House assemblies and House lunchtime competitions running through the year.

We have had some individual standout performances with Pavneet Birring setting a new Casey record for the longest discuss throw, throwing 29 metres. Ainsleigh Sapukotana making it all the way to the state championships for the under 12-13 100m sprint. In addition, we have seen some remarkable team performances with the Year 7 cricket team just missing out on the final by 3 runs. We also saw the Year 7 basketball team just fall short in the region final against Berwicks academy team, if it wasn’t for injuries, I’m sure the result may have been different.

As we look ahead to 2024, the seniors are in action in week 2 of the school year which will closely be followed by our Athletics Carnival on the 20th of February.

We look forward to another strong year in sport in 2024.
