Malo e lelei! In Week 9 we celebrated Tongan Language Week. The theme was ‘E tu’uloa ‘a e Lea faka-Tonga o ka lea’aki’i’api, siasi (lotu), mo e nofo’a’kainga. The Tongan Language will be sustainable if used at home, church and in the wider community. We started our week with donuts during Breakfast Club. Students were able to try their DIY skills with making feather hand held fans during a lunchtime activity. What would a Language Week be without food? The students were able to enjoy a chicken vegetable curry and Otai (pineapple coconut milk) drink at Lunch Club and a Tongan Quiz saw a dozen of student winners receive a VIP Lunch ticket, to avoid the Lunch club queue.
After school students had the opportunity to view the latest Tongan NZ Movie ‘ Red, White and Brass’. Here a Tongan community created a brass band, just so they could enter the Rugby World Cup in NZ in 2010 for free. This group having had no experience in playing an instrument, started by practising on plastic drink bottles. This movie was cultural, funny and based on true events.
Finally to end off the week, we were presented with some amazing music, costume and performances. I would like to Thank all the students and staff that participated and supported these events, as we continue to embrace and celebrate our school and its diversity. Malo aupito.
