Dear Somerville Primary Families,

Everyday is an exciting day at Somerville PS, there is always something happening, students sharing their learning and celebrating their success. The last two weeks have been no different. On Thursday night our students were part of the 2023 Wakakirri at the Frankston Arts Centre. Jess Emery has put a huge amount of work into organising this. Our students have spent the last 7 months rehearsing and practicing. On the night, our students performed exceptionally well, Somerville was awarded the Wakakirri Sprit Award, amongst other awards. Our students performance about persistence and resilience describing the journey for the Wright Brothers to develop a flying machine was extraordinary. This week we have been informed that we have been awarded a State Award, Jess and some of the cast will be representing our school at the Awards Showcase Night in October. Outstanding effort and congratulations to everyone involved!

The State results were released for the 2023 NAPLAN, it is with great pleasure that I can share them with you. Somerville Primary School continued to perform significantly above all schools in the area and the State. Based on the Exceeding or Strong Results, in Grade 3 we were 10% above State in Reading, Writing and Maths; In Grade 5 we were 13% above State for Reading and Maths. This is a credit to the excellent teaching throughout the whole school, and how hard our students have all worked. I would also like to thank the families of students who have supported their children as we know that NAPLAN can sometimes be stressful.

Over the last 2 weeks we have seen significant works conducted throughout the school;

  • Softfall/Mulching - We had the soft fall topped up in all of the playgrounds as well and mulch added to all of the garden beds.
  • EduMarkings – Rubber games have been applied to the ground for our students to use, new coloured 4 square, hopscotch, snakes and ladders, mirror me, Alphabet animals and the list continues.

  • Library Renovation/Refurbishment; the old office partition has been removed, a new entrance created and patching of the old walls. Over the next two weeks, there will be new carpet and wall coverings applied. We also have new furniture and shelving arriving later this term.

  • Shade Sail Posts for the main playground have gone in, the sails will be installed later this term.
  • New Shade Sail has been installed over the junior playground, this will provide better sun protection for our students; while letting in more light.

Don’t forget Book Character Parade today; district Athletics is next week, good luck to all of the students involved, we are proud of all of you! We have a large number of students who have read over 100 nights, there is still time to get to 200 nights this year, we have 99 days till December, our target is at least 300 students to reach 200 night of reading.

Congratulations to the Somerville Star of the week

Fathers Day afternoon is next week, we look forward to seeing all the dads, grandparents and special people; the classrooms will be open for everyone from 2:30pm on Friday the 1st of September.

Hats are back as of next Friday! As per the SunSmart policy, all students are required to wear hats from Friday the 1st of September. If you don’t have a hat, these can be purchased from PSW in Mornington.

Thank you to everyone who has completed the Parent Opinion Survey so far, we have had double the responses from last year. If you would still like to complete it, it is open until the 8th of September.

Have a great weekend.

David and Shane
