Chaplains Corner

Greetings all Somerville parents, carers, students and staff!

I trust that you are well in the swing of things this "warm" term!!!

Flipping your lid

What does it mean to flip your lid? Have you ever done it? I have!

I  read a good article "9 things every parent with an anxious child should know" by Renee Jain and thought Id share some of the ideas with you.

1. The Brain- If a child is anxious often reassurance and logic wont help. What they fear is genuinely threatening for them. The brain wont let the reassurance sink in. There is a rapid dump of chemicals and thoughts designed to protect for survival.

Many people have worry and this is good to let your child know. With anxiety the "logical brain" (pre-frontal cortex) goes on hold while the automated emotional brain takes over.(amygdala))

If you are interested you can google "What is my Lizzard Brain?" and this will explain what it means to "flip your lid".

How do you prevent this from happening? A good start is to practise square breathing that I wrote about in a previous newsletter.

Ill share some of the other 9 things in the next newsletters.

Kind regards
