LITERACY

Reading & Writing

This term, our Grade 3/4s are exploring a new class serial read, Uncle Xbox. Uncle Xbox is a book about a boy named Dusty who loves to play video games. One day a family member close to Dusty leaves and takes the Xbox with him. Dusty tries out different odd jobs to try and buy one for himself, but sometimes it doesn't work out the way he expects. This text aligns well with our Unit of Work 'Engineering for a Need'.

We encourage students to continue picking 'Just Right Books' and to read these daily at home if possible. Asking your child questions about their book is a great way to deepen their understanding of the texts they are reading.

In Reading, students will be focusing on:

  • Reading fluently
  • Building background knowledge
  • Expanding on and learning new vocabulary
  • Deepening their comprehension skills
  • Exploring suffixes and prefixes
  • Developing their knowledge of the different sounds and letter spellings through Extended Code

This term in Writing, our Grade 3/4s will be exploring poetry and procedural texts. Students will be expected to follow the stages of writing to produce published pieces of writing. Students will participate in Daily Reviews of expanding sentences and the structure of a sentence.

In Writing,  students will be learning to:

  • Identify the text structure and features of poetry and procedural texts
  • Publish pieces of writing with legible script
  • Identify and fix run-on sentences
  • Revise and edit their writing for punctuation and structure
