Principal's Report

Dear Parents/carers, students and staff,

As we approach the end of another eventful month at Hampton Park Secondary College, we're excited to share with you some of the enriching learning activities and events that have taken place recently within our vibrant school community.

Before, we recount these events I wish to take the opportunity to congratulate Assistant Principal Mr Max Eldridge and his wife, on the safe arrival of their new baby daughter Mackenzie.

Our students recently delved into the exciting world of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) during STEAM Week. The week was filled with hands-on activities, experiments, and challenges that encouraged creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Additionally, a group of our students had the opportunity to explore various trades firsthand during the "Try a Trade" excursion, gaining valuable insights into potential career paths and industry opportunities. Thank you to the STEAM and Careers Teams for their work in providing these opportunities for students.

During National Careers Week, we hosted an engaging Expo featuring over 40 exhibitors from diverse industries. This event provided our students with invaluable exposure to different career options and pathways. As part of the week's activities, some of our Year 10 students participated in Mock Interviews facilitated by Ardoch Services. I joined mentors from various backgrounds and industries to create a simulated interview environment, allowing our students to showcase their aspirations and receive valuable feedback. May I say, our students were very impressive.  Many thanks to the Careers and Student Services Team, the Vocational Major and Work-Related Skills staff and students for this excellent work and to Carly Pearson from Careers for her co-ordination of Mock Interviews.

From May 20th to May 24th, we celebrated Languages Week at our college. Our students immersed themselves in various cultures, languages, and traditions through interactive activities, language workshops, and cultural performances. It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to embrace diversity and expand their linguistic horizons.

Our Year 11 students showcased their entrepreneurial spirit during Market Day on May 21st. They put their business skills to the test by setting up stalls and selling handmade products, delicious treats, and innovative creations. Market Day was not only a fun and exciting event but also a valuable learning experience in entrepreneurship and commerce.

Following in the footsteps of our Year 11 students, Year 8 and 9 students have been immersed in entrepreneurial endeavors this week and will continue to explore innovative business ideas in the coming weeks. Through the "Like a Boss" subject initiative, students are learning valuable lessons in leadership, innovation, and teamwork as they develop and execute their business ventures.

This week we commemorated Reconciliation Week. This year the theme is now more than ever! It was a time for reflection, learning, and honouring the histories, cultures, and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Throughout the week, our students engaged in various educational activities and discussions to promote understanding, respect, and reconciliation.

Our Year 9 students embarked on an exciting journey during City Week from Wednesday to Friday. They had the opportunity to explore the vibrant cityscape, participate in cultural excursions, and engage with urban environments firsthand. City Week was a memorable and enriching experience that broadened our students' perspectives and understanding of urban life. Students experienced the Sports Museum at the MCG, National Gallery of Victoria, Queen Victoria Market, China Town and much more.

As we prepare for the end of Semester 1, Exam Week is scheduled from June 3rd to June 7th for students in Year 10 to Year 12. It's a time for students to demonstrate their learning and knowledge in their respective subjects. Additionally, we recently commenced conducting the Student Attitudes to School Survey this week to gather valuable feedback and insights from our students about their experiences and perceptions of our school community.

We're incredibly proud of our students who are participating in the Rugby Academy and representing college in the Rebel Shield competition. Their dedication, teamwork, and sportsmanship are commendable, and we wish them the best of luck in their upcoming matches.

Finally, a reminder that Semester 2 will commence on Monday, June 17th. We're looking forward to another semester filled with exciting learning opportunities, personal growth, and memorable experiences.

Please note, that Tuesday 11th June is a Curriculum Day - Report Writing for staff. This is a student free day; no students are required to attend. On this day teaching staff will finalise marking of student learning tasks and exams and will focus on Report writing.

I will be on Long Service Leave for the final 14 school days of Term 2. In my absence, the very capable, Ms Kelly Krieg will be Acting Principal. I look forward to seeing you when Term 3 commences.

Thank you to our dedicated staff, supportive parents, and enthusiastic students for making these learning activities and events possible. Together, we continue to foster a dynamic and inclusive learning environment where every individual has the opportunity to thrive.

Wayne Haworth,

Principal
