Diversity and Celebrations - Orthodox Easter and Greek Traditions

At Hampshire House we encourage our children to foster a deep respect for diversity and inclusion. This includes offering the children exposure to a range of celebrations, which are as diverse as the children who we educate and care for.

This week we acknowledged Orthodox Easter traditions and the children from the Margaret White room had a wonderful opportunity to engage in making Koulouraki, Greek Easter biscuits.  With the assistance of Ms Gina & Ms Desie the children measured, poured, kneaded and twisted their biscuits, whilst happily chatting about the celebrations that some of the children had planned for the weekend.

Whilst making their biscuits some of our Greek children talked about the red eggs that they receive during their Easter festivities and how everyone chooses one egg, looking for the strongest one. Then the egg cracking begins! Each person cracks their egg on top of another’s whilst saying “Christos Anesti” meaning “Christ has risen” and the other person replies “ Alithos Anesti” meaning “ Indeed he did”. The children explained that the winner is the person with the strongest egg and they are said to have good luck the whole year.

It is lovely to hear the children sharing their cultural experiences with each other. Wishing a Happy Easter to all our Orthodox families!
