Principal's Report
Dear HPS Community,
What another week with lots happening around our school!
Anzac Day Service
Wednesday morning our school captains led a moving and poignant service to remember and honour those who have served to defend Australia. The audience knew the importance of the ceremony, showing sincere respect and gratitude throughout the event. We had many people lay flowers in the poppy garden as a way of commemorating the brave men and women who fought for our freedom.
On Thursday the McGrisken family laid a wreath on behalf of our school at the Heidelberg Anzac service. We thank them for representing our school.
State Swimming
Congratulations to the nine students who represented our school at the SSV State Swimming Championships last Friday. Thank you to Mr Ethan Griffiths for his coaching and support and to the parents who attended to cheer on our students. We are very proud of each of you for you effort and skill to get to such a prestigious stage of the competition.
Cross Country
Well done to our Year 3-6 students for their participation in the school cross county at the beginning of this week. We couldn't have asked for a better day with the weather and the spirit of staff, parents and students involved was high. Congratulations to students who qualified for District. We wish them all the best and will be cheering them on Wednesday 22nd May.
Thank you to the Heidelberg Police who helped everyone cross Rosanna Road safely on the way to and from the event.
Community Engagement and Parent Reps
Community engagement is highly valued and something at HPS that school staff together with school council recognise is important for the benefit of the learning and development of students. Using community to engage in school activities and build a strong partnership between home and school is essential and something as principal I will continue to reflect upon and look at how to improve and strengthen at our school.
Class parent representatives (reps) have been something in past years that has had some facilitation by the school, however is not something that is going to continue in the same format.
Class parent reps have mostly been used, but not limited to, to sharing contact details with other parents and to have a forum where parents can share reminders and ask questions about what is happening in class/school and with upcoming school events etc.
The department has guidelines and advice on what constitutes a parent club in schools and how it is run and facilitated. We have a community engagement sub committee that runs within these parameters which we would love to have more people join and be part of! Please let me know if you are interested in joining this group as this can be a great way to connect with others whilst actively contributing to the school.
We communicate to our whole community through our newsletter, Capers, which is sent out weekly via Compass and includes important dates and information regarding upcoming events at the school. We also have year level newsletters that get sent out for the upcoming term, and includes information and dates specific to each year level.
School assemblies are another opportunity to highlight and remind the community of information and important dates. This is not intended to be different information but rather a different forum for the information included in Capers.
The school's Facebook page is a platform for highlighting and making visible the learning and opportunities presented to students at our school. It is another way of making connections between home and school.

We are pleased to have had two additional parents nominate to join school council, giving us a full complement of membership.
