Mr. Carlyle's Message
Hello families and welcome to this week’s newsletter.
As the seasons change and we begin to experience colder weather here in Ballan, a timely reminder that families can send their students to school in winter jackets. Our classrooms are all heated, so jackets are not worn in the learning spaces. Yet the yard can get cold so winter jackets are appropriate and allowed.
District cross country takes place next Friday and we are excited to be sending a strong representative contingent this year. Good luck to all the students involved, and for all parents attending please cheer loudly for our students.
This fortnight I have had several conversations with families about smart watches. This is a space we are currently collecting feedback on. The school's position remains as indicated in the information below, and the policy set by the Department and School Council. I wish at this stage to convey my understanding that a number of families have made considered efforts to select a device that is 'school friendly', and has extensive parental and access control features. However, our policies will be enforced as they stand currently, with student safety and privacy at the forefront of our agenda. At the request of several families, this policy will be reviewed at a school level at our next school council meeting.
Smart Watches
We have seen a sharp rise in the number of students who are wearing a smartwatch/device to school. There is a wide range of what these devices look like and their functionality. It is important to highlight that the Department of Education and the school have firm policies regarding mobile devices. A smartwatch is anything with access to a cellular (telecommunication) system and must not be used at Ballan Primary School during school hours, including lunchtime and recess, unless an exception has been granted. As of Monday, smartwatches will be treated in line with our mobile phone policy, and students are required to hand them in for the duration of the day.
